Pre-colonial period
• Filipino ancestor were able to preserve their indigenous culture through oral lore

• Oral literature – Literature that preserves trough storytelling and it is act of passing literature without
writing

• Proverbs – Poems that can be used as a guide or rules

• Myths and Legends – It is literary works that about how the world created and how things made of.

• Tanaga – It is Filipino poem that traditionally philosophical ideas about the world, event, people, etc.

• Folksong – Literary works that is lyrical and it is express people hopes, aspiration and lifestyle’s

• Fables and Folktales – portray about animals or inanimate object with human characteristics

Spanish-colonial period (1565-1898)


• Rise of the Cristian Faith – This period was entirely focused on religion this is when Spanish spread the
religion in the Philippines.

• Written Literature – This is their way to preserve literary works.

• Literary works – Most of them are focused on religions and It was written in the Spanish Language

• Religious it is a literary works that teaches about Christianity

• Secular – It is the correct way to interact or socialize to a group of people or other people.
Propaganda and Revolutionary Period
• This is the time when Filipino wants reform

• Political Essays and Political Novels – This aims to expose the corrupt Spanish rule using Articles, news,
satires, editorials

• Pedro Paterno – Was an author of first Filipino Novel which is Ninay.

• Nationalistic Theme – Novels, Poems, and articles about love for their country and Achieving Freedom.

• Revolutionary - Something Filipino wants to changes the Philippines

American Colonial Period


•They introduce us to a Public School system that all people can learn

• Poetry - It is original, spontaneous, competently written and later inappropriate consciousness.

• Drama - It is a story or situation that usually show some sort of conflict and it performed by actors
using dialogue and action

•Prose - It is written in English and dwelling in Filipino tradition and earmarks that literary output on
Filipino fictionist

• They introduced us new literary forms which is the free verse poetry and the modern short story and
the critical essay

Japanese Colonial Period


• Haiku - It is a free verse poem that compose of 17syllables that divided into First line 5, Second line 7,
Last line 5

•Usual Form - It is a poem that is usual or common

•Tanka - It has Measurement and rhyme

•Post-War Period - Return of English as a medium

•Tanaga - It is more like Haiku it has 17 lines also but Tanaga has measurement and Rhyme

Post-War Period
•Drama - It experience a lull during Japanese period because American Movie shows are closed

•Vernacular Literature - It refers to a spoken word rather than formal written language by the
professional

•Playwrights - It is the person that behind the written for the plays

•Short Story - It is a novel but short version that is usually dealing with the small cast of people.
•American New Critism - Individual and organic unity are emphasized in this unconventional genre of
poetry.

Late 20th Century Period

• Poet - Literary works in which the communication of sentiments and ideas is given a high level of
intensity through the employment of a specific style and rhythm

• Diverse Context - Describe a new transformative paradigm that focuses on reframing rather than
performing academic culture to meet population requirements.

•Political Landscape- Minority rule would mark a shift in the political landscape.

•Multi-facated - Having a diverse range of significant feature elements

•Martial Law - It is a military control to a normal civil.

1. How is the development of literature described in the different periods discussed?

Answer: It was been described differently like in Pre-Colonial literature was preserve in oral literature
while the others it preserve through written works.

2.Why is this development important to know?

Answer: For us to know the value of literature in our country and where it started
