WHAT IS MATERIAL
CHARACTERIZATION
TECHNIQUES?
Material Characterization Techniques refers
to various methods and processes used to
analyze and understand the properties and
behavior of materials. This techniques are
essential for assessing the materials,
performance, and suitability of materials for
specific application.
1. Microscopy: Is a scientific technique used to observe and study objects that are too small to be seen with our naked eye. These
include techniques such as optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and scanning probe microscopy. These methods allow for the
examination of microstructures of materials and can reveal defects such as cracks, voids and inclusions.

2. Mechanical Testing: These methods allow the the
determination of mechanical properties of material
such as strength, ductility, and toughness.
Additionally, these methods can be used to detect
failure mechanisms such as: ductile, brittle, or fatigue
failures.

3. Chemical Analysis: This include
techniques such as x-ray
fluorescence, x-ray diffraction and
energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy.
These methods allow the chemical
composition of materials to be
determined and defects such as
inclusions and impurities to be
revealed.
Non-destructive Testing Methods (NDTs) such as
1. Ultrasound
2. radiography and
3. magnetic particle are also important for material
characterization. These methods allow the internal structure
of materials to be investigated non-destructivity, revealing
defects such as cracks, voids or other defects within the
materials.
