• The verb “to be” is one of the most common verbs used in English

Introduction into Intonation
• In English, changing the intonation of a word can change the
meaning.
• Intonation – how high or low your voice goes when you say a word
• Ex.) Excuse me.

• Sometimes, in English, you have to use the right intonation for


something to make sense such as in questions.

• This is similar to many other languages.

Do you play sports?
• Sports use different verbs based on what they do.

• Play with team sports (you need a partner), competitive sports (you play to win!)
Ex.: Do you want to play tennis with me?

• Do with martial arts, like tae kwon do.

• Go with individual sports, sports you can do alone (verb = ing)


Ex.: Do you want to go skiing with me?

• Some sports are also verbs (ski, run, bowl, swim) but adding –ing changes them.

Review of “to do” and Simple Present
• We have already talked about “to do” a little bit this chapter and in the course
introduction.
• “To do” is an irregular word in the simple present tense – “do” or “does”
• “To do” is important specifically when asking questions.
• “To do” is very similar to the meaning of 하다 in Korean.
• “To do” is also important when talking about negative sentences.

• Remember the rule for simple present for regular verbs:


• Third person (he, she, it, [names]) get an “s” after the first verb
• He likes to play.
• He doesn’t like to play.

Grammar Tip! Sometimes, English speakers say “I do sell skis” as well as
