SHAPING AND

CLEANING OF
RADICULAR SPACE
DEFINTIONS ( GROSSMAN 13 TH

EDITION)
SHAPING AND CLEANING:
“removal of pulp tissue and debris from root canal &
Shaping the canal ….. (why?)
To receive an obturating material”

PULPECTOMY or PULP EXTIRPATION:

“Complete removal of normal or diseased
pulp from pulp cavity of tooth”
Other term: DEVITALISATION

DEBRIDEMENT:
“ When food or other debris have accumulated in
the pulp cavity , in addition to necrotic pulpal debris”
The removal of this material from the pulp cavity is
known as DEBRIDEMENT
OBJECTIVES OF SHAPING AND
CLEANING
Acc to grossman 13 edition
th

1. To DEBRIDE AND DISINFECT the root canal system

2. To SHAPE/CONTOUR the root canal walls….. (why?)
3. for the purpose of sealing the root canal completely with a well
compacted, inert filling material ( to achieve good obturation)
HERBERT SCHILDER’S OBJECTIVES OF SHAPING
AND CLEANING RC
MECHANICAL OBJECTIVES
1. a continuous, tapering, conical shape (CTC)
1. NARROWEST CROSS SECTIONAL DIAMETER-
APICAL
2. WIDEST DIAMETER- CORONALLY
2. Even taper towards apex; confluent with
access cavity
3. “quality of flow”: shape – plasticised gp to
flow – against the rc wall – without
impedence
4. Apical foramen as small as possible
5. Without transportation of the apical
foramen
BIOLOGIC OBJECTIVES
1. Confinement of instrumentation to roots
themselves
2. Removal all tissue from rc space
3. Necrotic debris NOT forced beyond the
foramen
4. Create SUFFICIENT space for Optimal
obturation of radicular space
Goals of shaping (q: why root canals should
be widened?)
1. Eliminate mircoorganisms
2. Remve pulpal tissue
Q: what happens if pulp remains?
A: when pulp extirpated – tags of pulp and odontoblasts remain – undergo
necrosis -- enovrnment for bacterial growth
3. Facilitate irrigant solution to reach apical thrird for effective disinfection
4. To receive gp; wider canal  easier to fill
Endodontic instruments

• Material options
1. Ss: more commonly used
2. Carbon steel: more flexible but rust easier. Indications specific
3. Niti: CURVED CANALS
1. M wire
2. R phase
3. C M wire
