Peripheral Speed
80 m/s = 80 Meters per Second peripheral speed
Note – if you mark the periphery of any diameter abrasive wheel, and
measure the total distance around the periphery of that wheel,
then x that distance by the operating Rpm, your
calculation should balance out at 80m/s.
Example – 230mm wheel
230 x 3,14 (π ) = 722,2mm (circumference of wheel)
722,2 x 6600 Rpm = 4766520
4766520 ÷ 60 000 = 80m/s.
Note – 60 000: 60 = converting Rpm to Rps
& 1000 = converting mm to meters

Product Selection

• Select correct wheel diameter for machine

• Ensure that the product is rated for the machine - rpm
• Select correct type of wheel for application
• Ensure correct center hole for shaft diameter
• Select correct shape of product – Type 27 / 41
• Must have a good knowledge of material being worked on
such as Mild Steel, Stainless Steel, Aluminum etc.
Expiry Date

The date stamp indicated above, is a “Expiry Date” and in general,

EN Code
wheels should no longer be used if this date has expired.
Storage of Products

Abrasive wheels must be stored on a wooden structure to prevent absorbing moisture

Common Accident Causes
Operator error:
Using the product carelessly, or not qualified enough
to handle the task assigned to him.
Incorrect Application:
Cutting the wrong way or wrong direction -
(must be against rotation of wheel) as well as using
under powered machines or incorrect Rpm.
Product Selection:
Using the wrong product for the wrong application.
Safety Factors:
Not adhering to the required protection gear and safety
guards on the machines.
Poor Machine Quality:
Worn Bearings, bent spindles, safety guards, electrical
Connections and damaged flanges
Mounting Of Wheels
Fig.A Fig.B

Note – flanges seat correctly and is suitable Note – distance between flanges due to
for cutting wheel applications – only if SFS flange shoulders seating - measures 3,2mm.
76 cutting flanges are not required. If This is only suitable for a grinding
grinding wheel is mounted, flanges should wheel as most cutting wheels are thinner
be turned around as in Fig.B and will not be clamped tight enough for
cutting purposes. For cutting applications
without SFS 76 cutting flanges, refer to
Fig.A
Mounting of Cutting Discs

Incorrect way – label must be visible outwards Correct way – label is clearly visible to operator

The flat metal section of the center ring is situated on the label side. The function of this ring is
to protect the top flange from seating on the exposed mineral from the wheel, thus preventing
damage and excessive wear to this flange. In addition, when the label is facing outwards, the type
of wheel can immediately be identified for additional safety reasons.

Product Problems
• CENTER RING TORN OUT
• OUT OF BALANCE EFFECT
• PINCHING OR JAMMING EFFECT
• POORLY CLAMPED WHEEL
• EXCESSIVE SIDE PRESSURE AND WRONG CUTTING FLANGES
• PRODUCT DELAMINATION
• WHEEL SNAPPED IN HALF
• EXCESSIVE MACHINE RPM
• VIBRATION
• DAMAGED CLAMPING FLANGES
Product Problems

 Wheel out of balance – possibly due to worn

bearings or incorrect mounting.
Product Problems

 Wheel pinched due to incorrect cutting direction,

cutting angle, poor clamping or operator error.
Product Problems

 Incorrect mounting – loose flanges

 Secondary damage from loose flanges
Product Problems

 Center of wheel torn out due to incorrect flanges

used and/or incorrect mounting and excessive side
pressure
Product Problems

 Product de-lamination – factory fault

Product Problems

Grinder fell with wheel attached, causing wheel to break in half

Product Problems

Wheel exceeded the maximum operating speed of 80m/s,

resulting in structural failure due to excessive
centrifugal forces (Pneumatic tool governor faulty)
Damaged Flanges

Typical example of not using proper flange spanners

Center Ring Indented

Indentation caused by incorrect mounting on shaft, with

shoulder of flange nut causing the indentation.
Center Ring Partly Extruded

Extruded damage caused by incorrect mounting on shaft,

with flat side of flange nut causing the damage.

A.2.2 Additional Inscriptions

Abrasive products shall be marked with the characteristics specified in Table A.1,
Marking of abrasive products, in a legible and understandable manner. Additional
inscriptions on the abrasive products such as type number, order number and
manufacturer’s product name is permitted provided legibility is not impaired.
