ANALYTICAL

LISTENING
• Listening is a skill of critical significance in
all aspects of our lives. Regardless of how
we’re engaged with listening, it’s important to
understand that listening involves more than
just hearing the words that are directed at us.
FOUR DIFFERENT
WAYS ON HOW
PEOPLE LISTEN:
1. Passive/ Marginal Listening. It is also called
hearing or auding. The listener hears the
sounds often in the background but simply
ignores them as he or she is engrossed in
another task.

For example: listening to podcasts, radio or television

shows while doing your homework.
2. Attentive Listening. The listener
focuses attention and shows interest in
what is being said. He or she takes note
of the specifics and how they relate to
the main points made by the speaker.
For example: listening to your
teacher’s discussion, getting
direction to a friend’s house
3. Appreciative Listening. This type of listening
gives the listener pleasure maybe from the
humor, or the blending of voices in choric
arrangements.

For example: listening to good music, poetry,

audiobooks, or meditation materials
4. Analytical/Critical Listening. This type of
listening involves analyzing the information
in a speech and making important decisions
about truth, authenticity, and relevance. The
listener judges the quality of the message and
decides either to accept or reject it.
4. Analytical/Critical Listening. This type of
listening involves analyzing the information
in a speech and making important decisions
about truth, authenticity, and relevance. The
listener judges the quality of the message and
decides either to accept or reject it.
For example: listening to your friend’s
problem before giving an advice, listening
to a sales person before making a
purchase, listening to politicians delivering
their advocacies.
How can you improve
your analytical
listening skills?
1. Stay away from noise and
distractions. Do not pay attention
to the person’s mannerism or attire.
2. Do not make judgments on
half-baked knowledge.
Concentrate
on facts and not assumptions.
3. Know their perspective. The
words of the speaker might not
interest you. But whatever they
are saying, is important for
them as a person.
4. Recognize the
difference between facts
and opinions.
5. Give honest feedback.
Feedback exhibits your
listening skills.
6. Don’t bombard with
senseless questions. Focus on
clarity. But let the speaker
finish his/her side of the story.
EXERCISE
The following are statements on how you can
improve your analytical listening skills. Write
“T” if the statement is true, and “F” if it is false.

3. When you listen to someone give a sales

4. Jumping to conclusions can be a barrier to effective
listening even when a speaker and a listener know each
other very well.
5. Taking notes on a speaker’s key points and
supporting material will help improve your listening
ability and retention.
6. If you disagree with a speaker, you have nothing to
gain by listening carefully.
7. Active listeners give their undivided
attention to the speaker in a genuine effort to
understand her or his point of view.

8. When you listen to a speech, it is usually a

good idea to try to remember everything the
speaker says.
9. When focusing your listening, you should
concentrate on a speaker’s main points,
evidence, and technique.
10. Critical listening involves engaging in a
mental argument with everything a speaker
says.
