ASSESSMENT

OF
LEARNING
-Group 6-
The difference between Assessment OF
Learning and Assessment FOR Learning is
a matter of function and purpose – a
matter of ‘WHO’:
Assessment of Learning is a way to see
what the students can do while
Assessment for learning is a way to see
what the teachers should do in response

TERRY HEICK
What are the guiding principles in the
Assessment of Learning
We teach with a certain object to attain.

We find out how well we have attained our

lesson objective, thus we engage ourselves in the
process of assessment.

The formative evaluation must be done

frequently to determine learning that early for us
to be able to make adjustment to our lesson in
accordance with information gathered.
1. Assessment of learning is an integral
part of teaching – learning process.

2. Assessment tool should match

performance objective.
3. The results of assessment must be fed
back to the learners.

Assessment serves its purpose ONLY when we return

corrected quizzes, tests, seatwork, assignments, and
evaluated projects at the soonest time possible.

Learners must know whether they are progressing

towards the benchmark set at the beginning of the class by
way of our performance objective.
4. In assessing learners,
teachers must consider
learners’ learning styles and
multiple intelligences and so
much come out with a variety
of ways in assessing learning.
5. To contribute to the building of the culture
of success in the school. It is pedagogically
sound that is our assessment techniques we
give some feedback along wit the snot-so –
good ones.

Comments like “nicely put”, “well done”, “fine idea”, ”good

point” on students papers boost their ego and add to their
level of confidence.
6. Emphasized on self-
assessment
Assessment should not force
students to compete one another’,
any competition should lie between
students and their own prior
performance. Self-assessment is
also termed as assessment as
learning.
7. If we believe that our task as teachers is to
teach all
pupils/students, and that it is possible that all
students, even those from limited
backgrounds, will have access to
opportunities and therefore can achieve, then
the bell curve mentality must be abandoned.
8. Assessment of learning should never be used as
punishment or as disciplinary measure.

9. Results of learning assessment must be

communicated regularly and clearly to
parents.
10. Emphasize on real world application
that favors realistic performances over
out- of context drill items.
The evaluation or assessment of learning is an
integral part of a lesson plan and that this can be
done while we are still in the process of teaching
or at the end of our teaching.
Ways of assessing learning

1. Involve your students. 3. Monitor students progress.

2. Assist in learning. 4. Challenge your students.
11. To ensure learning, do formative
assessment.

Formative
assessment - is a range
of formal and informal
assessment procedures
conducted by teachers
during the learning
process in order to
modify teaching and
learning activities to
improve student
attainment.
12. To ensure reliability of assessment
results, make use of multiple sources.

1. Written test
2. Performance
tests
3. Portfolios
4. Observations

Assessment in the Different
Phases of Instruction
1. Prior to Instruction
2. During Instruction
3. After Instruction
4. Appropriate Assessment Tools
Prior to Instruction
 Pre-Teaching Assessment
1. Written Pre-Test
2. KWL Technique
3. Inquiry Method
Goal: To diagnose students’ entry knowledge and skills.
Research found that “teachers in schools with
high achievement rates use PRE-ASSESSMENTS
to support targeted teaching of skills important to
learn for standardized test, as well as to groups
students for re-teaching.”
During Instruction
 Some of the ways in the assessment
for learning (Formative Evaluation)
1. Inquiry Method
2. Classroom (Activity) Observation
3. Quiz (most popular)

Goal: To ensure learning (Remedial

Teaching)

PROCESS OF ASSESSMENT
(OVERVIEW)
After Instruction
It is given at the end of instruction.
Post-test
Find-out the effectiveness of instruction.

Remedial measures
re-teaching
peer-tutoring
KINDS OF ASSESSMENT TOOLS
1.)Standardized Test
-Test that is administered
and scored in a
consistent/standard manner
teacher -made test
paper-pencil test
quizzes
KINDS OF ASSESSMENT TOOLS
2.) Performance Test
-Testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an
answer from a ready-made list.
Components:
a. Developmental Checklist-
-children’s individualized progress
b. Portfolios
-collections of children’s work
c. Summary of Report
-brief narrative summary of each child’s
performance and behavior

3.) Practical Test

-Assess student’s
practical skills
-workshops
-hands-on

4.) Portfolio Assessment

-Systematic and organized collection of

works
- Progress documented with specific products
