Genre is a category of
artistic composition, as in
music or literature,
characterized by similarities in
form, style, or subject matter.

FICTION
refers to literature created from the
imagination. Mysteries, science fiction,
romance, fantasy, chick lit, crime
thrillers are all fiction genres. Short
stories, fables, poems, drama, play,
etc. are all under the category of
fiction.

a. SHORT STORY
Refers to a brief fictional prose
narrative that is shorter than
novel and that usually deals with
only a few characters. The short
story is usually concerned with a
single effect conveyed in only
one or a few significant episodes
or scenes.

Derived from the Latin word fibula,
which means “a story,” and a
derivative of the word fari, which
means “to speak.”
Fable is a literary device that can
be defined as a concise and brief
story intended to provide a moral
lesson at the end.

main characters. They are

anthropomorphic (humanlike)
characteristics, such as the
ability to speak and to reason.

D. MYTH
Is a well-known story which
was made up in the past to
explain natural events or to
justify religious beliefs or social
customs.
Ex. The Gods and the Creation
of the World, The Sun, the
Moon, and the Stars,
NON-FICTION
refers to literature based on fact
written in creative way, making it as
enjoyable to read as fiction. Under
non-fiction are cookbooks, fitness
articles, crafting manuals,
documentaries, biographies, news
reports, etc.

a. Biography
A biography is simply an account or
detailed description about the life of
a person. It entails basic facts, such
as childhood, education, career,
relationships, family, and death.
Biography is a literary genre that
portrays the experiences of all these
events occurring in the life of a
person, mostly in a chronological
order.
B. Documentary
A documentary is a television or
radio program, or a film, which
shows real events or provides
information about a particular
subject.
Ex. iWitness, Brigada
Documentaries, The Atom Araullo
Specials.
C. News report
News reports are found in
newspapers and their purpose is to
inform readers of what is happening
in the world around them.
News reports have a certain
structure that you need to follow.
This structure is sometimes called
the Inverted Pyramid.
Ex. CNN, ABS-CBN News, GMA News
