DESERTIFICATI
ON
• Desertification is the degradation
What is process by which a fertile land
desertification changes itself into a desert by losing
its plants and animals, this can be
caused by drought, deforestation,
climate change, human activities or
improper agriculture. Desertification is
a process of degradation of the land.
Geography of Cyprus
• Cyprus is a country that is in Europe. It
is an island in the Eastern Basin
of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the third
largest island in the Mediterranean.

• The island is dominated by two mountain

ranges, the Troodos Mountains (South) and
the Kyrenia Mountains (North) or
Pentadaktylos, and the central plain.

• Cyprus has hilly fields, fertile plains, covered

with vineyards and coniferous forests in the
mountains
Climate of Cyprus
Like most Mediterranean countries, Cyprus shares a climate that differs
greatly throughout the months. Cyprus has long dry summers that range
from mid-May to mid-October, cool wet winters from December to
February. There are moderate autumn and spring seasons in between.

During the summers, the skies are often cloudless. However, the sea breeze
creates a pleasant, moderate atmosphere. The winters are mild with rain
and snow. Both seasons share abundant sunshine, with around 6 hours of
sunshine in the winter and 11.5 hours in the summer per day.
Causes of desertification in
Cyprus
• The dryness of the climate, the trends in
precipitation and temperature, rainfall and wind
erosivity, are the factors contributing to the
desertification process in Cyprus. Soil is a non-
easily renewable resource, especially in areas
with rapid degradation rates
Impacts of desertification on the
people and environment

There are several direct and indirect consequences of desertification.

Firstly, desertification causes a loss in biodiversity. This is because
most species won't be able to access water and plants easily. Which
also means that it worsens living conditions for these species. Another
impact is a reduced crop yield, which causes a loss of vegetation cover
or greenery in the environment. An Indirect consequence is that the
worsened living conditions cause a spread of diseases, these diseases
can also include Covid 19. Overall, desertification results in several
issues for the population and the environment of Cyprus.
Strategies adopt to preserve water as people
• Check your toilet for leaks.
• Stop using your toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.
• Take shorter showers.
• Install water-saving shower heads or flow restrictors.
• Check for leaks.
• Upgrade to water-efficient fixtures.
• Do not leave the water on unnecessarily.
• Use water-consuming machines to their maximum
capacities.
• Reduce use of plastic.
• Recycle.
