WAYS TO PROVIDE

EFFECTIVE
FEEDBACK
Why do we need to provide effective feedback?
-To improve a student’s performance –
not put a damper on it.
-Feedback provides personal and
professional growth.
-It provides criticism and allows to see
what everyone can change to improve
their focus and results.
-Feedback avoids you to not make
mistakes.
1. Feedback
SHOULD be
educative In
nature
- Providing feedback
means giving students
an explanation of what
they are doing correctly
AND incorrectly.
2. Feedback should be given in a timely
manner
- When feedback is given immediately after showing proof of
learning, the student responds positively and remembers the
experience about what is being learned in a confident manner.
3. Ask the 4 Questions

- Studies of effective teaching and learning have shown that learners want to
know where they stand in regards to their work. Providing answers to the 4
Questions on a regular basis will help provide quality feedback.

1.) What can the student do?

2.) What can’t the student do?
3.) How does the student’s work compare with that of others?
4.) How can the student do better?
4. Feedback should refer a skill or
specific knowledge
- This is when rubrics become a useful tool. A rubric is an
instrument to communicate expectations for an assignment.
Effective rubrics provide students with very specific information
about their performance, comparative to an established range of
standards.
5. Feedback can be given Verbally, Non-
Verbally, or in Written Form

- It is imperative that we examine our non-verbal cues . Facial

expressions and gestures are also means of delivering feedback
6. Concentrate on one ability
- It makes a far greater impact on student when only one skill is
critiqued versus the entire paper being focus of everything that is
wrong.
7. Educate on how to give feedback to
each other
- Model for students what appropriate looks like and sounds like.
Train students to give each other feedback in a way that is positive
and helpful.
8. Ask another adult to give feedback

- For students being critiqued by an adult is overwhelming but if the

feedback is positive it will boost their morale. Criticizing their
mistakes could also be important to for an adult. Because they
would listen to you much as like as their teacher.
9. Give genuine praise

- Students are quick to figure out which teachers use meaningless

praise to win approval. Giving them a genuine praise could
literally make them feel good about their works and themselves.
10. Provide a model or example

- Communicate with your students the purpose for an assessment

and/or feedback. Being a model or an example to students is
important especially of you are an adult.
11. Invite people to give YOU feedback

- Hearing other people’s thought or feedback about your work is

important. You must listen to feedback either negative or positive
because it is important for your improvement. People criticizing
your mistake(s) could be important so that you wouldn’t make that
same mistake(s) again.
