What is Sprinkler Irrigation System?
Definition
Basically, Sprinkler Irrigation is one of water delivering
technology for plant that mostly used in a crop field of
wheat, rice, etc.

The method of deliver / distribute water mostly using

pressured spray/sprinkler to distribute water by make
rain-like characteristics from above the plant surface
inside the field.

Beside distribute crop field, sprinkler irrigation can be

used as temperature controller for plant and soil,
protecting plant from frozen moist, fruit and shoots
delay, controlling erosion that caused of wind, distribute
water for seed germination, and spread chemical
solution (ex: pesticide, fertilizer, etc) to the plant.

Definition

This system can be used as long as the water resource is

quite cheap and available around the area. Water
resources can be taken from river, lake, reservoir or soil
water.

Beside, this system is better to be used in the field or

area that has less windspeed.

Needs & Design
What is needed?
Type
Classified by two type,
Based on the setting to distribute water :
• Rotated Sprinkler • Perforated pipe

Based on the type of operation:

• Portable • Permanent
• semi-portable • semi-permanent

Needs
To distribute the water from the resources to the plant, there is main
component of the system, as follows:

- Pressured water resources

- Pipeline network

- Sprinkler

- Valve that used for control the waterflow

Note: the part of needed objectives might be differ by each type

Calculation of Capacity

Q=

Q = capacity of pump debit (liter/second)

A = Area, (Ha)
d = depth of water (cm)
F = Number of day that needed to distribute the field
H = Time of system operation per day (hours)
E = Efficiency of water distribution (%)

Advantages
What is the advantage?
Advantages
- Uniformed water distribution available
- Can be used for every type of soil
- Fertilizer can be given in sprinkler
- Loss of water can be reduced significantly
- Making a rainfall characteristics
- Might be more evenly watered each part of plant (from above)
- Didn’t really need too slope channel as long as using huge power of water
compressor to sprinkle
- Available to be used for indoor use

Disadvanatges
What is Sprinkler the disadvantage?
Disadvantages
- Expensive price of investment
- Expensive maintenance cost
- Cost of energy need to be added into irrigation cost.
- Local wind condition affecting sprinkled water.
- Risk of blockage in the pipe or mouthpiece (since using quite small diameters
- Risk of sprinkler failed to rotated
- Needs pressure to sprinkle/spraying the water for distribution
- Requires extra power/electricity
- Requires extra installation of pipe distribution
