SKEWNESS

• Define skewness
• Compute the coefficient of
skewness
• Interpret the coefficient of
skewness
SKEWNESS
-is a statistical measure that
describes the asymmetry or lack
of symmetry in the distribution
of a dataset. It indicates the
extent to which the data deviate
from a symmetrical bell-shaped
curve, which is called a normal
distribution.
Skewness
- Describes the shape of the distribution of the data set
based on symmetry
- The coefficient of skewness is computed using

sk=
S
Where: sk = skewness
= mean
= median
s = standard deviation
3 Classifications
1. Positively skewed distribution
SK > 0 ()
2. Negative skewed distribution
SK < 0 ()
3. Normal distribution
SK = 0 ()
Measure of Skewness
Negatively Skewed
● Skewed to the left
● Is a distribution where the
thin end tail of the graph
goes to the left part of the
curve
● This happens when most of
the scores of the students are
ABOVE the mean
Normal Distribution
● Is a special kind of
symmetric
distribution
● Can be determined
using the values of the
mean and standard
deviation
Positive Skewed
● Skewed to the right
● Is a distribution where the thin
end tail of the graph goes to
the right part of the curve
● This happens when most of the
scores of the students are
BELOW the mean
