Mathematics 7

Lesson 30
Key Ideas:
 Identify and apply relationships of angles at a point and
on a straight line.
 Solve problems involving sides and angles of a Polygon.
 Calculate the measures of Central Tendency of
Ungrouped Data.
 Calculate the Range and Standard Deviation of
Ungrouped data.
Lesson Component 1 (Lesson Short Review)
Time: 7 minutes
Questions

1. (i) Complete: If 5 equal angles meet at (or ‘around’) a point, the

size of each of the angles is ………. degrees.
ANSWER: 72

(ii) The exterior angles of a regular nonagon (9-sided polygon) are each 40°.
Use this information to calculate the sum of the interior angles of a nonagon.

ANSWER:
1260°

Lesson Component 2 (Lesson Purpose/Intention)
Time: 3 minutes

We have been working on the solution of problems

involving: angles at a point and on a straight line;
sides and angles of a polygon; the representation of
data in tables and graphs; and measures of central
tendency, range and standard deviation of ungrouped
data. Today we are going to consolidate this work
through the solution of such problems.

Part 4A
Stem for Items 1 and 2

The ‘central island’ of a special traffic

roundabout in the small town where Zina lives has
been built in the shape of a regular decagon (10-sided
polygon). The island has been decorated by dividing
the decagon into 10 equal (‘congruent’) triangles as
shown in the diagram below.
Part 4B
Item 1
Questions
1. (i) Show that the size of each of the 10 equal angles that meet at the
center point of the central island of
the roundabout is 36°.

(ii) What type of triangle are the 10 congruent triangles that make up the
central island of the roundabout?
ISOSCELES

(iii) Calculate the size of each of the other two angles (at the border of
the central island) in each of the 10 congruent triangles.
72 DEGREES
2. (i) Use your answer in 1(iii) to find the size of each interior angle of the
decagon that forms the central
island and the sum of the interior angles of the decagon.

Size of each interior angle =

144°; Sum of interior angles =
1440°

(ii) A regular decagon can be divided into 8 triangles as shown in the

diagram.

1. What is the mode number of cars passing through the traffic
roundabout each minute and the
range for the data?
Mode = 5;
Range= 5
2. Complete the f × 𝑥𝑥 column and the Cumulative Frequency
column of the table.

(i) Use the formula OF MEAN to find the mean number of cars
passing through the traffic
roundabout each minute. Mean = 7
(ii) Find the median number of cars passing through the traffic
roundabout each minute.
Median= 7
3. (i) Complete Columns 6 (using Mean = 7), 7 and 8 of the table for the survey.

ANSWER
3.
(ii) Show that the standard deviation for the data is approx. 1.73.
