Nature
Power
Is the ability to dominate
another person or group-
as in, I have power over
him.
Power
The
ability to
change
the future.
Power
Usually
comes from
force and
threat.
Power
Is the ability to do something
on one’s own, it refers to one’s
abilities - Sources of this kind of
power are intellect, resources,
knowledge, stamina, etc.
Bases of Power
Legitimate
This comes from the belief that
a person has the formal right to
make demands, and to expect
others to be compliant and
obedient.
Reward

This results from one


person's ability to
compensate another for
compliance.
Expert
This is based
on a person's
high levels of
skill and
knowledge.
Referent
This is the result of a
person's perceived
attractiveness, worthiness
and right to others' respect.
Coercive
This comes from the belief
that a person can punish
others for noncompliance.

Types of Power
Position
Some measure of power is
conferred on the basis of
one’s formal position in an
organization.
Knowledge or Expertise

People who have


knowledge or expertise can
wield tremendous power.
Character or Ethics
The more trustworthy
individuals are, the more
power they have in
negotiations.
Rewards
People who are able to
bestow rewards or
perceived rewards hold
power.
Punishment
Those who have the ability to
create a negative outcome for a
counterpart have the power of
punishment.
Gender

Dealing with someone of


the opposite sex can confer
power.
Powerlessness
In some instances, giving
up all power can be very
powerful.
Charisma or Personal Power
Leaders who have had
charisma or personal power,
invariably the names of Mother
Teresa, John F. Kennedy, and
Ronald Reagan come up.
