OBJECTIVES

• Describe the VUCA world;

• Explain the appropriate responses to VUCA ; and
• Identify four principles for flexible learning.
VUCA is an acronym that was based on the theories of
Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus in 1987 but was used by the US
armed forces afterward. Each letter stands for a condition or a
situation that is present now.
V STANDS FOR VOLATILE

It refers to unstable and unexpected challenges that re of

unknown duration. Volatile also demands understanding the nature
and dynamics of change (Volatility, 2014, Kail,2010a).
U STANDS FOR UNCERTAIN

This refers to unknown outcomes and consequences. The

experience of uncertainty open us to surprise and is often
unpredictable (Kail,2010b).
C STANDS FOR COMPLEX

Which refers to multiple interconnected parts and variables.

This refers the availability or the prediction of some data. Complexity
involves understanding the relationship between causes and effects
and the other variables that are difficult to control or categorize
(Kail,2010c).
A STANDS FOR AMBIGUOUS

Where the casual relationship are not clear; this is when there
is no precedent experience and what we face is just unknown.
Ambiguity involves vagueness of data or presentation, which may
be brought about by multiple possible interpretations or mixed
meaning (Kail,2011).
FOUR PRINCIPLES OF FLEXIBLE
LEARNING

• Vision – sets the direction and the orientation of

educational institutions as they adapt changing learning
environments.
• Understanding – creates interconnection.
• Clarity – involves simplicity and streamlining
information to the most and nonnegotiable aspects of
learning.
• Agility – points to flexibility ; this facilitates innovation
and helps build up resilience.
