FORMATION OF

SOLAR
SYSTEM
Formation of our Solar System
• Our solar system formed about 4.5 billion
years ago from a dense cloud of interstellar
gas and dust.
• The cloud collapsed, possibly due to the
shockwave of a nearby exploding star, called a
supernova.
• When this dust cloud collapsed, it formed a
solar nebula – a spinning, swirling disk of
material.

• Most of the collapsing mass collected in the

center, forming the Sun, while the rest
flattened into a disk out of which
the planets, moons and asteroids formed
Birth of Stars
• Stars are born within the clouds of dust and
scattered throughout most galaxies. A
familiar example of such as a dust cloud is the
Orion Nebula.
How do planets and stars form
out of dust ?

• All the particles of dust and gas have there

own weak gravity. They pull on each other
with very weak forces. As they stick together
their total mass increases so does the strength
of their gravity .
• That means they attract more dust and gas with
a stronger force.

• This starts form a small ball. If the ball gets

beyond a certain size , it will get hot enough to
become a star. Otherwise it will become a
planet

• It takes millions of years to form a star or a

planet.
Evolution of solar system
• The Solar System has evolved considerably since its initial
formation.

• Many moons have formed from circling discs of gas and dust
around their parent planets, while other moons are thought
to have formed independently and later to have been
captured by their planets.

• Still others, such as Earth's Moon, may be the result of giant

collisions. Collisions between bodies have occurred
continually up to the present day and have been central to
the evolution of the Solar System.
Size and Time Scales of the Solar System
• The Earth revolves around the Sun at a distance of 150
million kilometers (93 million miles).

• The orbits of the planets are nearly circular, and measure

from one-third to 30 times the size of Earth's orbit.

• Mercury, the innermost planet, orbits the Sun in about

three months, while Neptune takes 165 years.

• The Sun contains about 99.9 percent of all the mass of

the solar system.
