Introduction
Childhood obesity remains a significant public health challenge, linked to poor physical
and mental health. In the United States, childhood obesity is among the highest globally.
Recent studies show that the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents
continues to increase.
Objective:
1. To examine the changes in obesity incidence among US children growing up 12
years apart, using two parallel nationally representative kindergarten cohorts.
Methodology
● The Early Childhood Longitudinal Studies–Kindergarten are
observational cohort studies conducted by the National Center for
Education Statistics (NCES) of the U.S. Department of Education.
● The study examined the prevalence and incidence of obesity in
children using data from the 1998-1999 cohort. Obesity prevalence was
calculated as the percentage of children with obesity at a given time,
while annual incidence rates were calculated as the annualized risk of
developing obesity between data waves. The study stratified
cumulative incidence estimates by gender, race, ethnicity,
socioeconomic status, school location, and birth weight.
Methodology
● Young people who were born in the 2000s experienced obesity incidence at even
higher levels, at younger ages, and at higher severity during the developmentally
important stages of childhood.
