Andre Kertesz – Artist

Research
Andre Kertesz is a famous Jewish photographer who was born in
Hungary on the 2nd July 1894 and unfortunately died on the 28th
September 1985 in New York. Kertesz served in world war 1 for a short
period of time for which he took pictures of the trenches with a
smallish camera. However, most of these pictures he took were
destroyed during the Hungarian Revolution, before moving to Paris to
continue his work in the art industry starting off with magazines. Then
during WW2, he decided to move to the United States to escape the
conflict. After saving up enough money, he bought his first camera
which his family didn’t agree upon continuing to push his career in
business. However, in his spare time, he took pictures of the local
peasants, gypsies, and landscape of the Hungarian Plains. Showing the
events which occur in a day to allow him to capture the moment in
such a special way it inspires the minds of others to partake in the art
of photography.
Andre Kertesz – Photo Analysis
The composition in this photo is a row of chairs holding a
strong shadow which is enhanced by the monochrome
picture. in the background I can see that there are more
chairs to progress the repetition involved in this photograph.
I think that the idea behind the photo Kertesz took is that
there are so many chairs available, yet no-one takes the
opportunity to sit down and rest. Like in a working life they
have no time to sit down and relax, making this photo more
meaningful to the hard-working community. I like this photo
as it reflects on my life. I work hard and have very little time
to rest. I feel like Kertesz could improve this picture by
lowering the contrast and brightness to make the picture
more defined and detailed. However, knowing his
equipment availabilities, he could have got a lower angle to
get all the chairs to be aligned making the picture have a
stronger repetition aspect to its property.
Henri cartier bresson
Henri Cartier Bresson is a famous French photographer of
which on the 22nd august 1908 and died on the 3rd august
2004 (both in France). He had always had an interest in the art
industry as at the age if 5 he had an apprenticeship in his
uncle's painting studio. Shortly after, he had found his passion
for photography making him famous after many masterpieces
he had created. Bresson's style of photography is mixed
however, his main style is surrealism as it contains a hidden
message within every photo, leaving the viewer wondering
what the true meaning is. This became an interest to Bresson
due to its mysterious and puzzling understandings to the
images.
Henri cartier bresson –
photo analysis
The composition in the image is quite chaotic as there
is a woman in the background walking upstairs while
over a dozen pigeons are flying around her flapping
their wings showing their dominance. The
monochrome makes the birds look as if they were
glowing making them the focus in the image.
Likewise, due to the chaotic events of which are
occurring in this photo, it suggests that the woman
could be in some sort of distress as she is surrounded
by flying creatures blocking her way. I like this photo
due to its eventful scene and rough look. However, I
think that the photographer could have improved this
picture by adjusting the brightness to make the
picture more defined allowing the viewer to
recognize the true meaning behind this surreal piece
of art.

he was considered to be one of the most important
British Photographers.
Bill Brandt – Photo
Analysis

This photo "A snicket in Halifax" is monochrome. This is due to

the old aged camera of which Brandt would have used. Also
representing the low quality. However, this famous piece is so
special because of the bright white sky illuminating the wet
cobbles. Even though the building in the back is very dark,
almost invisible, you can still see that the building is there and
not just a black object. This makes the viewer look deeper into
the image though as they are interested in finding out what is
it.

I like this picture as is it very dark and is simple. Also, knowing

this is a raw image, it surprises me of what the photographer
could do with such low-quality equipment wanting me to know
his ideas behind each photo.

Steve McCurry - Artist
Research
Steve McCurry took this famous photo of the "Afghan
Girl". This picture is what made McCurry an influential
photographer due to it appearing on the National
Geographical many times. Alongside more of his other
work which he has created. The piercing green eyes that
this young girl has contrasts with the green background.
The red clothing also makes the green eyes stand out.
The girl in this picture looks shocked in a way as if she
was mad with that serious look on her face.

the younger generation as the humor involved within
these pictures make us laugh at ourselves including a

Martin Parr –
Photo Analysis
This still life photo shows what people look
like during an action, for example there is a
man walking and a group of people talking;
and by the look on their faces, it could be
something serious as they aren't laughing or
look like they're having a good time. Making
the viewer see this as quite humorous as
they can have a funny look on their face or
could be doing something inadequate.

The bright colours of red and blue really

stand out as they contrast, making the mood
of the picture seem very calm.

I like this picture due to the vibrant colours

and due to the modern look, this area has
going on. Meaning that it includes a diverse
population.
