terms of Science
and Technology
Learning objectives:
1. Human Flourishing
2. Technology as a way of Revealing

A state where people experience
positive emotions, positive
psychological functioning and
positive social functioning, most of

one’s individual human
potentialities, including
talents, abilities, and virtues in
the pursuit of his freely and
rationally chosen values and
goals.
Human flourishing in
science and technology
•In the pursuit of human to a good life,
he/she may unconsciously acquire,
consume, or destroy what the world has
to offer. Science and Technology must
be taken as part of human life that
merits reflective and as Martin
Heidegger says -- meditative thinking.
•Technology is defined as:
•1. means to an end (instrumentality) ,
and
•2. human activity (anthropological)
Technology as Mode of Revealing
Martin Heidegger
• A German philosopher and a seminal thinker in the Continental tradition of
philosophy.
• Widely acknowledged to be one of the most original and important
philosophers of the 20th century.
Heidegger’s view on Technology
• He strongly opposes the view that technology is “a means to an end” or “a
human activity.”
• These two approaches, which he calls, respectively, the “instrumental” and
“anthropological” definition, are indeed “correct”, but do not go deep
enough ; as he says, they are not yet “true.”
• Technology, according to Heidegger must be understood as “a way of revealing
“ (Heidegger 1977, 12).
Heidegger’s view on Technology
• Technology, according to Heidegger must
be understood as “a way of revealing “
(Heidegger 1977, 12).
• Revealing is his translation of the Greek
word alètheuein, which means ‘to
discover’ – to uncover what was covered
over. Related to this verb is the
independent noun alèthia, which is usually
translated as “truth”, though Heidegger
insists that a more adequate translation
would be “un-concealment.”
How can technology
be ‘a way of
revealing’?
In Heidegger's work, technology is a
poiesis that discloses or reveals the truth.
Technology reveals the world as raw
material, available for production and
manipulation.
Technology as Poiesis:
Applicable to Modern
Technology?
since Poiesis + Techne = revealing
Technology's essence is that it reveals aletheia or truth to us. Yes
but no because modern technology goes beyond causality
Modern Technology reveals something different.
ARE WE WORRIED ABOUT MODERN TECHNOLOGY? THE ESSENCE
OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY BECAUSE WE ARE SCARED OF WHAT
WE CREATED INTO THE WORLD?
we no longer see this :

Instead, we see…
This!
Enframing is the essence of modern technology. Enframing is when we see how nature
should fit with us than how we should ship with nature. instead of allowing nature to
give, and to reveal on its own, we enframe and take its sources for granted and
appropriate them as standing reserve.
