What is a variable?

Variables are an important part of science projects and experiments. What is a variable? Basically, a
variable is any factor that can be controlled, changed, or measured in an experiment.
Scientific experiments have several types of variables.
TASK: based on your previous lessons in Science and in GAC 013, write in your notebook FOUR things that
could be seen as scientific variables.

HOME WORK – THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD
1) Make an observation about something that happens in
nature/ask a question.
2) Do basic background research – think of what variables
need to be considered to explain [1]
3) Make a hypothesis – this is a guess as to why the
observation occurs
4) Create an experiment to test your hypothesis
5) Accurately collect data & information from the experiment
6) Analyse the data that was collected from the experiment.
7) Is the hypothesis supported or rejected?
• Supported – Accept Hypothesis
• Rejected – Review and change your hypothesis and experiment

Write a short 150 word essay about what characteristics made Charles Darwin a good scientist.
Research the history of his discovery of the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.
