Albien wonders on the effect of eggshell on the growth of the plants. He

decided to design an experiment. He pulverized the eggshell and mixed the same
amount of it to the same amount of soil in two pots.
Does eggshell powder affect the growth of the plants?

1 2.

3. 4.
5.

Independent variables, Questions to answer.

dependent variables
What does Albien want to investigate in his
control variable, experiment?
constant variable, 1.What do you think happened to the plants grown
control group, with eggshell powder?
experimental group. 2.What variable has a direct effect on the experimental
group of plants?
3.What variables were remained constant or in the same amount in all plant set –
ups?
4.What is the main variable of this observation that responds to change?

Activity 3: I Belong Here

Directions: Read each statement carefully , Identify the statement if it is a problem,
hypothesis, experiment , data or conclusion and then write the number of each
statement in their proper laboratory apparatus.
1. There will be no difference in how long it takes the water to freeze, whether or not
it has sugar added to it.
2. Based on the results of your experiment, it come out as to whether water with
sugar freezes faster, slower, or at the same rate as water without sugar added.
3. I want to know if a bean plant will grow more quickly outside or inside.

4. There is a significant difference between the two growing situations for bean
plants.
5. Fill two identical containers with the same amount of room temperature water.
6. Look at the time it took for each container of water to freeze.
7. It took 15 minutes to dissolve the water crystal in tap water.
8. Based on the data you collected, it is a conclusive answer to the question as to
whether a bean plant placed inside or outside will grow more quickly.
9. Five drops of Iodine solution were put into 10 ml of water for each test tube.
10. To test this hypothesis, you might find a pedestrian-friendly overpass from which
you can observe the carpool lane on the freeway, for a 60-minute period during rush
hour.

Activity 4. Formulating Problem and Hypotheses

Directions: Read and analyze the paragraph below. Supply the answer on the
questions being ask.

Vryle, a grade seven student, decided to

design an experiment to investigate the factors
that affect the solubility of salt in water.

So he prepared 5 test tubes to test with the

different factors that may affect the solubility of salt.
For each question, write the proper statement to answer

1. What problem Vryle wants to look for an answer? Formulate a problem.

2. What effect does water temperature have on salt solution? Make a
hypothesis.
3. What effect does stirring the solution do on the speed of dissolving the
crystals? Create a hypothesis.
4. What effect does finer crystals do in solution rate? Make a hypothesis.
Activity 5. Application of Scientific Method

Directions: Read and understand the selection. Answer the questions below based
on the experiment of Harmony, a grade seven student from Gabriela Silang High
School.Harmony made an electromagnet with 10 coils that picked up 3 paper clips.
She asked herself what will happen if she would use a thicker wire, and thought that
using a thicker wire would make the electromagnet stronger.

Harmony’s Plan:
1. Wrap a thin wire around a nail 15 times and connect to a battery. Count
how many paperclips the electromagnet attracts.
2. Wrap a thick wire around a nail 15 times and connect to a battery. Count
how many paper clips the electromagnets attracts.
Harmony’s Data
ELECTROMAGNET # of Paper clips attracted
Thin Wire 4
Thick Wire 9
From Harmony’s
experiment, answer the following questions:

1. What question does she have to answer?

2. What is her prediction?
3. What are her plans to answer her question?
