Let’s review what
is matter all about
Matter
is anything that
occupy space and
has mass.
How many states of
matter do we have?
We already have
22 states or forms
of matter.
States of Matter
1.) solid
2.) liquid
3.) gas
4.) plasma
5.) BEC – ( Bose Einstein Condensate )

General Properties of Matter

1. MASS
Is the amount of matter in an
object. It is commonly
measured using a balance and
is usually expressed in grams
(g) or in kilograms (kg).

2.
Weigh
Istthe measure of the pull of
gravity on an object. It is
commonly measured using a
spring balance and is
expressed in newtons (N).

3.
Volum
e
Is the amount of space occupied by an
object.

Volume = length x width x height

cm3 V=lxwxh
V=4x2x1
V = 8 cm3
Volume
The volume of solids is usually measured in cubic
centimeters (cm3), while that of liquids and gases are
measured in milliliters (ml ).

The volume of a regular solids the product of its length,

width, and height. The length, width, and height may be
measured using a ruler or a meterstick.
Let’s practice!
Find the volume of a block
of wood that measures 16 cm
in length, 7 cm in width, and
3 cm in height.
Answer:
L = 16 cm
W = 7 cm
H = 3 cm
Solution:
V= lxwxh
V = 16cm x 7cm x 3cm
V = 336 cm3
The volume of irregularly shaped
solids can be measured using the
water displacement method, which
is based on Archimedes’ principle.

This principle states that when an

object is placed in a liquid, the
volume of the displaced liquid is
equal to the volume of the
submerged object, causing the level
of the liquid to rise.
The volume of a liquid
is usually measured
using a graduated
cylinder, although in
other measurements
that need better
accuracy, measuring
pipettes are used.

4. Density
Is the amount of matter in a given
volume. Mathematically, density is equal
to the mass of an object divided by the
object’s volume.

Density= mass
volume
General Properties of Matter
Take
note Density
The density of an object does not change
regardless of the amount of matter.
Hence, a gold coin has the same density
as a bar of gold.
Density
Objects that are denser than water sink in
water while objects that are less dense than
water float in water.
vegetable oil

water
In the graduated cylinder shown, honey has the
greatest density, so it sinks at the bottom of the
glassware. On the other hand, vegetable oil is
honey the least dense among the three liquids, so it
floats on top.
Example
A bar of gold has a mass of l000 grams and has
a volume of 25 cm3. What is its density?

Mass = l000 grams

Volume = 25 cm3 Solution:
Density = mass
volume
Density = l000 grams
25 cm3

Density = 40 g/cm3
Let’s practice!
What is the density of a
piece of wood that has a
mass of 27 grams and a
volume of 9 cm3?
Answer:
Mass = 27 grams
Volume = 9 cm3
Density = ?

Density = mass
volume
Density = 27 grams
9 cm3
Density = 3 g/cm3

Ephesians

grace was given
according to the
measure of Christ’s
gift.”
