Understanding
Matter
Matter is anything that has
mass and volume.

All matter is made

out of atom
Mass,
Weight
and
Mass Is the amount of matter in an
object.(kg/g)

Mass is not
equal to your
weight.
Mass Vs. Weight
Mass Vs. Weight
Mass Vs. Weight

Mass – amount of matter in an

object.
Weight – is how heavy an object is
in relation to Earth’s force of Gravity.

On Earth, an object with more mass

has greater weight. Unlike mass, the
weight of an object may change
depending on the object location.
Volume Is the amount of space an object
occupies.
Volume
Volume 1 2
• Is the amount of space an
object occupies.
• When an object occupies
more space, it has a greater
volume.
• In the same manner, an object
that occupies less space has
less volume
Volume
The volume of a Regularly-shaped object can be
determined by multiplying its Length (l), Width(w),
and Height (h). V=lxwxh

Take note!!
- Volume is measured in terms of cubic units such as cubic centimeters or cubic inches
Volume
V= l x w x h
V= 12 x 4 x 6

V= 288 cm3
Water Displacement Method
The Volume of an irregularly shaped object can be
measured by how much water it displaces.

According to Archimedes, a
Greek Mathematician and
Scientist, an object placed in
water displaces a volume of
water equal to the volume of
the object. That is,
Water Displacement Method
The Volume of an irregularly shaped object can be
measured by how much water it displaces.

Volume of water displaced = the volume

of the object placed in water
Water Displacement Method
The Volume of an irregularly shaped object can be
measured by how much water it displaces.

Volume of water displaced = the volume

of the object placed in water
Water Displacement Method
How much volume does the pebble in the figure
below have?

You can put the pebble in

a Graduated Cylinder
with 10 mL of Water
Water Displacement Method
How much volume does the pebble in the figure
below have?

When you slowly drop

the stone in the water,
the water level rises –in
this example – to 20 mL
How do we get the volume of a pebble?
Subtract the initial water level from the final water level.
Volume of Object = final water level – initial water
= 20 mL – 10 mL
= 10 mL
Remember!!

Mass – amount of matter in an object.

Weight – is how heavy an object is in
relation to Earth’s force of Gravity.
Volume - Is the amount of space an
object occupies.
Match the Definition in Column A with the correct term in Column B.
Write the Letter of your answer on the blank before each number
A B

____ 1. how heavy an object is in relation to a. Mass

Earth’s force of Gravity
____ 2. amount of matter in an object. b. Matter
____ 3. amount of space an object occupies. c. Water Displacement
Method
____ 4. Anything that occupies space and has d. Volume
mass
____ 5. A method that measures the volume of e. weight

Physical Properties
Brittleness
Is the ability to break easily. Materials that
break easily are called brittle.
Physical Properties
Buoyancy
Is the ability of an object to float in a
liquid
The ability of an object to float in
water depend on its density. An
object that has lesser density
will float on water.
But the material will sink is the
material’s density is greater than
that of the fluid
Physical Properties
Ductility
Is the ability of a material to be drawn into
fine or thin wires.
Tungsten that is use to make
filaments in light bulbs.
Physical Properties
Elasticity
Is the ability of a material to be stretched and
return to its original shape and size after being
stretched.
Physical Properties
Flexibility
Is the ability of a material to bend without
breaking.
Unlike rubber bands,
paper clips and straws
cannot be stretched.

However, they can be

bent, turned or twisted
because they have the
special property of
flexibility
Physical Properties
Hardness
Is the physical Properties of Matter that allows it
to resist being scratched and dented.

Diamond Concrete Wall Granite

Physical Properties
Malleability
Is the property of a material that allows to it to be
forged, pressed, beaten, or rolled into thin sheets.

Silver
Aluminum
Copper
Physical Properties
Solubility
is the ability of a material to be dissolved in a
liquid. When a material dissolve in another
substance, a solution is formed

When you add sugar to a

glass of water it will
dissolved when stirred.
Physical Properties
Tenacity
One of the physical properties of matter that can
resist being pulled apart.

Metals have greater

tenacity than wood. It is
harder to pull the
components of a metal
part than it would be to
pull the components of a
piece of wood aparts.
Properties of Matter
Chemical Properties
• Properties that change the
substance.
• It refers to the observable chemical
composition of an object. They tell
how an object can change into
another material.
Chemical Properties
Flammability
is the property of material that can be
easily burned.
Chemical Properties
Corrosion
The damage on a material when
exposed to different substances.

Rusting – the reacting

of iron with water and
oxygen.

Rust – an orange

Importance of
Reading
Product Labels

How does one benefit from an accurate interpretation of

product labels?
Importance of
Reading
Product Labels

Product labels give you information about the product, it

includes directions for safe and proper use of the
product, proper storage, precautionary measures to
