SKETCH & TYPES OF
LOCATING
Process of accurately positioning and
aligning components or workpieces in
relation to each other or a reference point.
Proper locating is essential to ensure the
correct assembly of parts and the overall
quality of the final product.
There are several methods and types of locating, each suited to different applications.

A. Flat Surface

There are three primary methods of locating work from a flat surface :

Solid Support
• Easiest to use.
• Can be either machined into the tool base or installed.
• Surface acts as a locating point.
Adjustable Supports

• Used when the surface is rough or uneven.

• Types : ( Threaded, Spring, Push types )
• Threaded : - Easiest and economical.
- Large adjustment range than the others.
• Used with one or more solid locators to allow any
adjustment needed to level the work.
Equalizing Supports

• Form of adjustable supports.

• Provide equal support through two connected contact
points.
• As one point is depressed, the other raises and maintains
contact with the part.
• Used on uneven cast surfaces.
B. INTERNAL
DIAMETER

• Locating a part from a hole or pattern to accurately

position work
• Fasten the internal locator with both screws and dowels
when large hole is locate the work
C. EXTERNAL PROFILE

• An external profile jig and fixture is a specialized tool or device used in manufacturing and
engineering processes to hold and guide a workpiece during machining, assembly, or
inspection operations.

• External profile jig and fixture is designed to assist in working

on the outer surfaces or contours of a part or component.

• There are 3 types about external profile:-

• Purpose
• Components
• Materials
• Purpose
• To ensure the accurate and
repeatable positioning of a
workpiece so that machining
or assembly processes can be
performed with precision. It
is particularly useful when
working on parts with
complex external shapes,
contours, or profiles.
2. Components
• Typically consist of various components, such as
clamps, supports, guides, and locators, designed to
secure the workpiece in the correct orientation and
location.

• The design of the fixture depend on the specific

requirements of the part being processed.s
3. Materials

• Jigs and fixtures are often made

from materials like steel,
aluminum, or plastics.

• The choice of material depends

on factors such as the type of
workpiece, the manufacturing
environment, and the required
durability.
