Definition of Past Perfect Tense
The past perfect tense is a change in the form of the verb to express that there was an
event or action that was completed at a point in the past, before any other action (in the
past too) occurred. Well, usually, this “other action” moment can be told specifically.

Actions that have been completed in the past can occur repeatedly or only once. Apart from
that, you can also use this tense to tell about an event that happened in the past and was
also completed in the past.

You know, basically, the past perfect tense is a combination of the simple past tense and
the present perfect tense. Well, what is characteristic of this one tense is the auxiliary verb
“had”.
Sentence patterns formula

+ Positif S + Had + Past Participle (V3)

- Negatif S + Had + Not + Past Participle


(V3)

? Introgatif Had + S + Pas Participle (V3)


Example
(+) When I arrived in Jakarta, Rara had already returned to Bandung. (Ketika saya
sampai di Jakarta, Rara sudah kembali ke Bandung)

(-) She had not studied Japanese before she moved to Japan. (Dia tidak belajar bahasa
Jepang sebelum dia pindah ke Jepang)

(?) Had your father watched the film before they gone home? (Apakah ayahmu sudah
menonton film sebelum mereka pulang?)
What is Conditional Sentences Type 3?

The conditional sentences type 3 is used to talk about


things which did not happen in the past. If you native
language does not have a similar construction, you may
find this a little strange, but it can be very useful.
Third Conditional Structure:
IF +Past Perfect, Subject + would/could/might +
have + Past Participle

Or
Subject + Modal + Have + V3 + If + Past Perfect
Tense
EXAMPLE

• If I had studied hard, i would have passed the exam



(Jika saya belajar telah belajar keras, saya akan lulus ujian)

Fact : I didn’t study hard and I didn’t pass the exam

• If we had not woken up late, we would not have missed the bus

(Jika kita tidak bangun terlambat, kita tidak akan tertinggal bus)

Fact : We wake up late and miss the bus and we regret that we woke up late
