Directions:

• Read the problem carefully.

• If you choose to show your work on paper, you may. However,
a picture of the work needs to be included on the slide to
support your work. Make sure that you have written your
name on your paper. This must appear in the picture.
• When you have completed the project, you will need to move

Rocky’s Cell Phone Performance Task

Problem:
Rocky’s parents are buying him a cell phone. His
parents told him that they could only budget $1000
this year for his cell phone and calling plan. Rocky
wants to get the brand-new J-phone and found three
wireless companies that carry that phone. The
companies each have different plans that include
unlimited talk, text, and data.
The Plans
Question: Which plan can Rocky’s parents afford with a budget of $1000?

Write a summary for Rocky to give to his

parents to explain his choice. This should be
on the next slide. Add an additional slide if
needed.

Make sure that you show your calculations

and explain what they mean in your
summary. Follow the checklist.
Summary/ Work

Rocky’s parents are buying him a cell phone. His parents told him that they could only
budget $1000 this year for his cell phone and calling plan. Rocky wants to get the brand-
new J-phone and found three wireless companies that carry that phone. The companies
each have different plans that include unlimited talk, text, and data.
First organize the plans:
Plan 1: Plan 2: Plan 3:

year for his cell phone and calling plan. Rocky wants to get the brand-new J-phone and found three wireless

and data.

Then we will organize the plans and the story

data. The variable “x” is the amount per month.
Plan 1:
180 + 80x ≤ 1000
80x ≤ 1000 – 180
80x ≤ 820
x ≤ 820/80
x ≤ 10.25 Budget: $1000

Question: Which plan can Rocky’s parents afford with a budget of $1000?
They can pay plan 1 for 10 months, they can pay plan 2 for 11.5 months and they can
pay 1 year with plan 3.

The plan that best suits Rocky is plan 3.

Does the solution make sense?

The solution makes sense in real life because the answer was that he can pay 12 months with
the 1000 dollars and with plan 3 they reach 12 months.
Reflect: After you have completed the task, answer these
questions. Insert a text box under each to answer.

I decided to use inequalities for the plans because Rocky can only spend at most $1000 and
with an inequalities I can represent him.

He could tell his parents that the $ 1000 dollars will be enough to pay for the whole year and
he will not lack money.
