2017 LEYTE EARTHQUAKE

Eastern Visayas, including Leyte,

is one of the seismically active
areas in the country because of
the Philippine Fault and the
Philippine Trench, which are the
main earthquake generators that
can affect the area. In addition,
there are other local faults which
can be sources of small- to large-
magnitude earthquakes.

The quake also wreaked havoc on the
provinces of Sarangani, North, and
South Cotabato, leaving around
7,684 families affected. Damaged
infrastructures include public
markets, churches, highways,
schools, and residential houses.
There is also a report received by
PHIVOLCS about the sea receding
about 150 meters from the
shoreline, an indication of an
impending tsunami. Eventually, the
water returned 75 meters inland.

One of the deadliest earthquakes

and was dubbed as the "most
terrible earthquake" in the
recorded history of the
Philippines is the 1645 Luzon
Earthquake. During this time,
only Spaniards who died were
counted. If properly recorded,
this could be the most
devastating and deadliest
earthquake in the country.

2013 BOHOL EARTHQUAKE
The magnitude 7.2 earthquake on 15
October 2013 main shock, triggered
shallow landslides that can be observed
on the steep natural slopes of the famous
Chocolate Hills in Bohol. The shallow
disaggregated landslides are typically not
associated with particular geologic units
and/or type of slopes. They are usually as
deep as the root zone of the vegetative
cover, anywhere from several decimeters
to a meter deep, and consist of dry, highly
disaggregated and fractured material that
cascaded down-slope to flatter areas at
or near the base of slopes.

1976 MORO GULF EARTHQUAKE
This offshore event generated by Cotabato
trench, a less prominent trench system in the
Philippines, was the largest tsunamigenic
earthquake to have occurred in Mindanao in
the last two decades. It was an earthquake
that resulted in massive destruction of
properties and great loss of lives. The tsunami
generated contributed immensely to the
devastation. After the sea spent its fury and
rolled back to its natural flow, thousands of
people were left dead, others homeless or
missing and millions of pesos lost with the
damages of properties. Properties lost not only
include establishments for residential and
commercial use, but also bancas that, as a
whole, represents the livelihood of hundreds
of families.

the most devastating and most
dramatic earthquakes that struck the
Philippines. Some survivors were
rescued from under the rubbles of

Evidence of liquefaction was reported

in Ayungon, La Libertad, Guihulngan,
Jimalalud, and Tayasan. The most
extreme lateral spread combined with
ground undulation and subsidence
occurred along the approach of Tuway
Bridge affecting approximately 100
meter stretch of the road. Many
bridges and some structures suffered
from loss of bearing capacity. The
Pangaloan Bridge and Martilo Bridge
collapsed and were rendered
temporarily impassable for days.

The quake caused damage on homes,

bridges, and other infrastructures.
There were also power interruptions
in the affected areas. But despite the
intensity only one person was
reported dead and one injured
because of the landslide in Cagayan
de Oro City.
INSTITUTIONS, ORGANIZATIONS, OR
DEPARTMENTS THAT ARE PRIMARILY AT
WORK OR ACTIVATED DURING THE
OCCURRENCE OF THE EARTHQUAKE
PHILIPPINE RED
CROSS
Disaster Management Services (DMS) is one of the major
services of the Philippine Red Cross, primarily tasked to deliver
humanitarian assistance during emergency and disaster
situations. Through its wide network of well-trained, skilled,
and committed staff and volunteers across the country, the
DMS implements its mandate through an integrated holistic
approach to save lives, minimize human suffering, and to
reduce losses and damages. Provides appropriate
humanitarian services in the areas of rescue, relief, health,
welfare, and emergency shelter to the most vulnerable groups
among the total affected population
NON-GOVERNMENTAL
ORGANIZATIONS (NGO)
NGOs have been part of the global disaster risk reduction (DRR)
ecosystem as they continue to shape both humanitarian emergencies action and
the DRR agenda at different levels where their presence is needed and valued
and their contribution is uniquely recognized. Their response focused on
emergency food relief, temporary shelter, emergency medical aid, debris removal
and habitat restoration, trauma counseling. and raising families.
Play a key role in the immediate aftermath of disasters by extending
assistance in rescue and first aid, sanitation and hygiene, damage assessment
and assistance to external agencies bringing relief material.
During the post disaster phase, the NGOs can take a lead by providing
technical and material support for safe construction, revival of educational
institutions and restoration of means of livelihood and assist the government in
monitoring the pace of implementation for various reconstruction and recovery
program.
PHILIPPINE INSTITUTE OF
VOLCANOLOGY AND SEISMOLOGY
(PHIVOLCS)
This continuing program will provide accurate and timely
information on significant earthquakes and tsunami events that may
significantly impact the Philippines through the enhancement and
continuous operation of the earthquake and tsunami monitoring
system in the Philippines. The Information System deals with the
planning, coordination and control of the Institute's earthquake data
resources. It covers both data administration, which is concerned
with the management of meta-data (data about data and
processes), and database administration, which is primarily
concerned with the technical integrity of the physical database
environment, the day to day operations of the Institute's
earthquake-related databases and policies governing their everyday
use.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
01

During an earthquake, drop to the ground,

cover your head and neck with your arms
and, if possible, a sturdy piece of furniture.
Stay away from windows and bookshelves.
Try to hold on until the shaking stops. or
an all-clear signal is given.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
02

Stay calm! If you're indoors,

stay inside. If you're outside,
stay outside.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
03

Stay away from hazards. One of the

biggest hazards during an earthquake is
falling debris and furniture. Stay away
from windows and furniture that could
fall over. Avoid places that have objects
stored overhead. Kitchens and garages are
dangerous because of the items stored in
overhead cabinets and shelves.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

04

If You Are in a Vehicle- Pull to the side of

the road and stay inside until the
earthquake is over. Do not stop under
overpasses or power lines.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
05

If outside, get into an open area

away from trees, buildings,
walls and power lines.
