1990 Bohol Earthquake

a. DATE AND PLACE/S OF OCCURRENCE

- Around 3:15 PM of February 8, 1990 when a destructive earthquake struck the
island of Bohol.

b. MAGNITUDE
- This shallow seated tectonic earthquake with magnitude 6.8

c. EPICENTER
- Its epicenter was located about 17 kilometers east of Tagbilaran City with a
maximum felt intensity of VIII, based on Rossi-Forel Intensity Scale, in the towns
of Jagna, Duero and Guindulman all situated on the lower area of the NE
quadrant of the island. It was felt at intensity VII in Garcia Hernandez, Loboc,
Valencia and Anda, Intensity VI in Tagbilaran City, the rest among the 16
municipalities of Bohol and in the neighboring islands of Cebu and Camiguin.

d. NUMBER OF DEATHS AND INJURIES

- The temblor exacted six fatalities with more than 200 injured. Approximately
46,000 people were displaced with at least 7,000 rendered homeless.

e. NUMBER OF ESTIMATED COST OF DAMAGED STRUCTURES

- Damage to property for the 1990 Bohol earthquake was estimated at 154 million
pesos.

f. ADDITIONAL RELEVANT INFORMATION

- The earthquake of February 8, 1990 offshore the Island of Bohol in the Central
Philippines was a tsunamigenic event caused by crustal displacements along an
unknown northeast-southwest trending fault. Isoseismal distribution confirmed
such orientation with higher seismic intensities at the southeastern areas of
Bohol Island. Subsequent field surveys, interviews with eyewitnesses and
measurements of runup heights, support that significant tsunami inundation
occurred along the southeastern coast of the island. Based on this investigation
and review of historical data, we conclude that the source region of the 1990
tsunami was along an unknown offshore submarine structure.
10. 1973 Ragay Gulf Earthquake

a. DATE AND PLACE/S OF OCCURRENCE

- Ragay Gulf Earthquake happened on March 17, 1973.

b. MAGNITUDE
- The earthquake has a magnitude of 7.0

c. EPICENTER
- The town of Lopez ranks next to Calauag with respect to the extent of
destruction. The place is relatively farther from the causative fault and the
epicenter of the mainshock, but soft underlying sediments present in Calauag are
similarly found in Lopez.

d. NUMBER OF DEATHS AND INJURIES

- This earthquake left over 1,600 casualties.

e. NUMBER OF ESTIMATED COST OF DAMAGED STRUCTURES

- Damage to property for the 1973 Ragay Gulf Earthquake was estimated at 12
billion pesos (500 million US dollars).

f. ADDITIONAL RELEVANT INFORMATION

- Almost a hundred houses were destroyed while 270 others were damaged in
Calauag, Quezon due to a magnitude 7 earthquake. A number of other buildings,
roads, railroads and bridges were damaged. The Sumulong highway bridge
collapsed while PNR’s railways were “badly twisted” due to the ground
movement caused by the quake.
