MOBILITY

At the end of the lesson, the

students should be able to:
1. Establish correct movement patterns
2. Adopt proper mobility exercises to daily
activities
3. Value the importance of mobility and stability
of joints in improving movements
Mobility
Involved mainly in:

•Joints
• specific function is generally classified
either providing stability or mobility.
Joints that are usually mobile:

• Ankle (sagittal plane)

• Hip (different planes)
• Thoracic spine (t-spine)
• Shoulder
Joints that are usually stable
• Knee
• Lumbar spine
• Scapulae
Lack of mobility
• inability of a joint to move well through its specific range of motion (ROM)

Tendency is:
When an intended mobile joint is immobile, the stable joint is
forced to compensate by becoming less stable.

*Familiarizing the involved parts of the body before moving on to the examples of lack
of mobility

Examples of Lack of Mobility
and its consequence/s
a. If the hip lacks mobility because of weak or poorly activated
iliopsoas muscles, the lumbar spine that is intended to be stable
will move instead, compensates the inaction of the hip.
b. When the lumbar spine is compensated due to the hip’s lack of or
poor mobility, the hip’s function (e.g., flexion, extension,
abduction, adduction) further deteriorates. Result: LOW BACK
PAIN
c. Poor knee ankle will also result in knee pain because the loading
upon landing is transmitted to the knee above.
Application and Analysis
Consider the following in doing your daily activities including sports
involvement
Joint Function
Ankle Mobility (Sagittal)
Knee Stability
Hip Mobility
Lumbar spine Stability
Thoracic spine Mobility
Scapula Stability
Shoulder mobility

*Joints have specific functions: Stability or mobility. Inadequate control of

one’s joint triggers a decrease in ROM to effect contrast.
* On the other hand, a joint that makes mobility forces a stable joint to
compensate by becoming less stable. Thus, stability affects mobility.
