GOVERNMENT SCHEMES FOR

PROMOTION OF CRAFT AND


CRAFT ENTERPENURSHIP
 The government implements various schemes for promotion and development of handicraft
sector under “National development of handicraft development programme (NHDP)”and
comprehensive handicraft cluster development scheme (CHCDS).
 1. survey and mobilisation of Artisans under Ambedkar hastshilp vikas yojana .
 The main thrust of this scheme is community empowerment by mobilising artisans in to self
help groups. AMBEDKAR hastshlip vikas yogana also provides support in human resource
development, infrastructure and technology support, healthcare , and more.
 2.Marketing support and services
 This part of program provides interventions for domestic marketing events to artisans , such as
providing financial assistance for organising or participating in market events in India.
Assistance is also provided for hiring built-up space in events organised by other institutions.
Besides this , craft awareness and demonstration programmes are also conducted .
Financial assistance is provided for organising or participating in marketing events abroad market
studies ,craft exposure programmes, cultural exchange programmes ,etc .There is also assistance
provided for compliance ,social, and welfare needs for Artisans .
 Another component is publicity and brand promotion ,which highlights Indian handicrafts in
print and electronic media, and on the web
3.DESIGN AND TECHONOLGY UPGRADATION AND HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
Under this design and technology upgradation scheme, workshop trainig is conducted to develop new
prototypes to suit the preferences of contemporary markets, introduce new techniques and technology
for enhanced production.

4.DIRECT BENEFITS TO ARTISANS .


This scheme is proposed to support artisans during old age/death etc or any emergency, capacity building of
artisans , awards to artisans .

5.INFRASTRUCTURE AND TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT .


The objective of this component is to setup a permanent marketing infrastructure in towns/metropolitan
cities to provide direct marketing facilities to the handicrafts artisans /handloom weavers through urban haat
, Emporium, marketing hub, handicraft museum, craft resource centre.

6.RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT .


Under this scheme , the surveys and studies are sponsored/conducted to generate suitable inputs for planning
purposes. Also, workshop, seminar, conference, radio, programmes, etc. are organized in online as well as
offline mode to sensitize the artisans on latest development in handicrafts sector.
To preserve all the antique handicrafts products of the country, the government has established crafts
museum at pragati maidan , new delhi, which is popularLy known as national handicraft and handloom
museum .
In addition to the above the government has also established 18 muesums throughout the country under
infrastructure and technology support scheme to preserve traditional art and craft products of the country .
 The government confers national award under designed and technical development scheme
where in 135 shilp guru awards 1093 national awards and 815 national merit certificate
have been awarded to master craft persons across the country till date .

The steps taken by the government to boost and strengthen handicrafts sector, which
includes handmade crafts carpets, so as to compete with machine-made product are as
follow:

Market development assistance(MDA) grant and market access initiative (MAI) Assistance for
participation in fairs and exhibitions/reverse/buyer-seller meets in India and abroad

Assistance provided by the government for marketing study, branding/international


publicity, participation in fairs and exhibitions, buyer-seller meet in india and abroad etc.
Through marketing and other schemes .

Brand image promotion of Indian handicrafts abroad through seminars and publicity as well
as awareness programs in India.

Organising Indian handicrafts and gifts fair twice a year besides product-specific shows .

Display of new designs through exporters for creating awareness and marketing .
