Unit 12 A Lesson from Bethany Hamilton's Life

Objectives
•To write a narrative about a lesson you have learned from the life of
another person
•To use the present perfect

Modeling
Some narrative paragraphs tell a story in a way that the reader learns a
lesson or gains some insight. In this case, the story is from the life of another
person.
A. Read the example paragraph and answer the questions that follow.
Bethany Hamilton inspires me. During a time when something unthinkable happened
to her, she never lost her positive attitude, and she has never given up on her dreams.
She is my role model. When Bethany was only thirteen years old, she was attacked by
a tiger shark while surfing. The shark took her left arm completely off. If I were her, I
don't think I would have ever gone near the ocean again. I would have been terrified,
but Bethany got back in the water within a month of the attack. She wanted to be a
professional surfer, and she wasn't going to let the loss of her arm stop her. She
trained hard, and she was able to surf again. Within a year of the attack, she was
already participating in surf competitions. Now Bethany has become a pro surfer.
Bethany didn't let losing her arm stop her from realizing her dreams. She has been an
inspiration to millions.
