INTRODUCTION

The Philippines, much like numerous other countries globally, is

undergoing significant economic expansion. This period of growth has
led to the proliferation of convenience stores, which are increasingly
appearing in various regions across the country.

In recent times, there’s a significant increase in the number of

convenience stores popping up throughout Brgy. Dalahican. While
these stores offer a convenient shopping experience for residents, their
proliferation may be having adverse effects on our local vendors who
have been serving our community for years.
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this study is to comprehensively investigate the impact of
the rapid expansion of convenience stores in Dalahican on local vendors. This
research aims to understand the challenges faced by local vendors, the evolving
consumer preferences, and the potential threats to the community’s social and
economic fabric. By doing so, it seeks to provide insights and recommendations
for local vendors to adapt and thrive in the face of increased competition from
convenience stores.
Local vendors face a substantial challenge as a result of Dalahican’s brisk convenience
shop growth. Due to convenience shops’ longer hours, wider assortment of products, and one-stop
shopping, these neighborhood merchants now face more competition and the possibility of losing
their devoted clientele. This change in consumer behavior puts at risk the distinctive products,
attentive service, and strong ties to the neighborhood that local businesses have developed over
many years. Things are further complicated by price competition and the cultural effects of
convenience stores’ marketing and branding initiatives. Local vendors must adjust to maintain their
position as community pillars in this shifting marketplace as convenience stores implement cutting-
edge technologies.

CHAPTER TWO
Review of Related Studies
and Literature
Review of Related Literature
The convenience store industry in the Philippines has experienced
substantial growth, driven by a young population, a thriving business process
outsourcing (BPO) industry, and changing consumer preferences.
Convenience stores are becoming increasingly popular due to their
convenience, catering to the needs of a busy middle class. This growth is
significant given the economic factors such as rising household incomes and
urbanization trends (Digest, 2018). According to Pascual (et al.,2019), Filipino
consumers are showing a preference for convenient food channels like
convenience stores when it comes to purchasing ready-to-consume food and
drinks. Additionally, there is a government initiative encouraging citizens to
support local agriculture by purchasing locally made foods. This shift
highlights a growing awareness and emphasis on sustainable consuming
habits, aligning with both economic and environmental consideration. These
findings collectively reflect the evolving consumer behaviors and market
dynamics in the context of convenience stores in the Philippines.
Review of Related Studies
The rise of convenience stores globally, exemplified by the
'Shopping Local' trend, underscores their adaptability to local
needs, shaping retail landscapes in developed and developing
countries (MacPherson, 2021). Customer satisfaction in these
stores hinges on attributes like ease of choice and service quality,
emphasizing the importance of meeting customer expectations for
positive shopping experiences (MonalisaKhatre and Iyenger,
2019; Jayasubramanian, 2015). Furthermore, the informal
economy, particularly street vending, serves as a vital component,
offering income generation and affordable products, necessitating
recognition for its socio-economic importance in urban planning
(Tonda and Kepe et. al, 2016). These findings highlight the
multifaceted nature of convenience stores, emphasizing their local
adaptation, customer-centric approaches, and their role in shaping
urban environments and consumer experiences.
