Technique
■ Process or method that
makes use of the materials
on hand
■ Skill of the artist to execute
his or her work and
produce the effect he or
she wants to achieve
There are diverse
techniques for
different art forms
The distinctive character
or nature of the medium
determines the technique
Choreography
Techniques
Choreography is the art of designing sequences
of movements in which motion, form, or both
are specified. The technique involves human
movement and form within the elements of
time, space, and shape. It also involves energy
in a nonverbal and emotional context.
There are two fundamental
dance methods in choreography

1. Planned
2. Improvisation
PLANNE
D
The choreographer
prescribes the
movements and forms in
detail, giving little or no
opportunity for the
dancers to be creative
IMPROVISATIO
N
Dancers get a general
guideline but can then
interpret some of the
movements themselves.
This oftentimes referred
to as “interpretative
dancing.”

different dance
genres
1. BALLET
It is an artistic dance form
performed to music using precise
and highly formalized set steps and
gestures. Classical ballet, which
originated in Renaissance Italy and
established its present form during
the 19th century, is characterized
by light, graceful, fluid movements
and the use of pointe shoes.
2. JAZZ
Key features of jazz dance
styles include using feet,
arm, and hand positions,
isolations (head, shoulder,
hips), timing, shape, and
movements including
body rolls, jazz walks,
swings, and kicks.
3.
BALLROOM
Ballroom dancing is a partnership
dance where couples, using step-
patterns, move rhythmically,
expressing the characteristics of
music. Ballroom dancing consists of
two styles: the Smooth, or
Standard, and the Rhythm or Latin.
A. Smooth, Standard
Style
Focuses on the elegance, grace and
fluidity of movement. The Foxtrot, Waltz,
Tango, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep are
danced in this manner.
B. Rhythm, Latin
Style
The Rhythm, Latin style focuses on a display
of vibrant energy and a personal flair. The
couple’s dancing pattern is syncopated to
the rhythm of the music. Included in this
style are the East Coast Swing, Jive, Rumba,
Bolero, Cha Cha, Mambo, Samba and Paso
Doble.
4. MODERN
Modern dance was born to
break away from the mold of
Classical Ballet and focus on
freedom of movement and
expression. A defining
characteristic of modern
dance is the singular use of
space and choreographers
often dance in their own
pieces.
Modern dance
It is a specific style of dance that is free form
and stems from the core, or torso, of the body
and uses elements like contact-release, floor
work, fall and recovery, and improvisation
5. Contemporary
Contemporary dance is a style of
expressive dance that combines
elements of several dance genres
including modern, jazz, lyrical and
classical ballet. Contemporary
dancers strive to connect the mind
and the body through fluid dance
movements and stresses versatility
and improvisation, unlike the strict,
structured nature of ballet.
7.
CULTURAL
Cultures around the world
have practiced Folk dances
unique to their people since
the emergence of dance in
human life. In the Philippines,
simple basic rhythm
dominates the folk dances
and establishes the pattern of
movement.
8. HIP-HOP
Hip-hop dance includes a
variety of styles including:
a) Popping
b) Locking
c) Breaking
d) Boogaloo
e) Social dances
A. Popping
Popping consists of quickly contracting and relaxing
your muscles, causing a jerk in your body.

B. Locking
The hips and legs usually remain in a relaxed
position while movements of the arms and hands are
more distinct and exact. Movements are big and
coordinated closely with the beats of the music.
C. Breaking
Breaking, or breakdancing, is composed of
movements performed at different levels: toprock
(performed while standing), downrock (performed
close to the floor), power moves (acrobatics) and
freeze moves (poses).

D. Boogaloo
Boogaloo is a very loose movement, mostly using
the hips and legs. Boogaloo seems to give the
illusion that the dancer has no bones.
E. Social Dances
Social dances, or '80s party dances, emerged during
the 1980s. The popular dances were adopted by and
subsequently taken to another level by club dancers.
Social, a freestyle dance style, is the element of hip
hop frequently featured in music videos.
9. DANCE-POP
Dance-pop is known for
being highly eclectic, having
borrowed influences from
other genres, which varied by
producers, artists and
periods. Such include
contemporary R&B, house,
trance, techno, electropop,
new jack swing, funk and pop
rock.
