Steps for summary questions
Step 1 – Identify it as a summary question
Step 2 – Read the topic sentence and figure out the main
idea: general statements and key words
Step 3 – Eliminate choices that are not directly related to
the topic sentence
Step 4 – Eliminate choices that seem like details or specific
statements
Step 5 – Go back to the text (especially topic sentences)
Tip #1: Memorize the question types
Tip #2: Find keywords and focus on them
Tip #3: Practice reading with a timer
Tip #4: Beware of modifiers in answer choices
Tip #5: Store knowledge of academic vocabulary
