Hearing vs Listening
Critical Listening
means making judgement
about how good or bad the idea is. It
means assessing and evaluating the
truth of what is being spoken or read
aloud and being able to discern the
strong and weak points of an idea or
an argument.
STAGES OF LISTENING
1. RECEIVING
-involves hearing and attending
2. UNDERSTANDING
-the audience determines the context
and meanings of the words they hear
3. EVALUATING
-the listener assesses the information
they received, both qualitatively and
quantitatively
4. REMEMBERING
-the audience categorizes and retains
the information they’ve gathered from the
speaker for future access

-the listener provides verbal and/or
nonverbal reactions based on short-
or long-term memory
