VARIATIONS
Objectives
: he learners will be able to:
T
1. define direct variations and inverse variations.
2. illustrates situations that involve direct and
inverse variations;
3. translate into direct or inverse variation statement
a relationship between two quantities given: (a) table
of values; (b) mathematical equation; (c) graph and
vice versa; and
4. solve problems involving direct variation and
inverse variation.
TERMS:
CONSTANT is a quantity whose value does
not change.
VARIABLE is a quantity whose value is
changing. It stands in place of any one of a
set of constants and is usually represented
by a literal symbol.
RELATED QUANTITIES
Which of the following quantities are related?

Speed of the
Number of car and the
spent hours on distance
media and number Hard traveled
of friendssocial work and
success
DIRECT VARIATION
-It is a relationship
between two entities
such that when the value
of one entity increases
the value of the other
entity also increases. Define direct variation.
DIRECT VARIATION
For 𝑥 and 𝑦 and constant
𝑦
𝑘, if the ratio equals 𝑘,
𝑥
then 𝑦 is directly
proportional to 𝑥, or 𝑦
varies directly as 𝑥. In
symbol,
𝒚 = 𝒌𝒙
where 𝑘 is the constant of
variation.
Write the symbol and equation for each
statement.
a. “𝐶 varies directly as 𝑑”.
b. “𝐴 varies directly as 𝑆.”
c. “The area 𝐴 of a circle varies directly as
the square of the radius 𝑟.”

equation;
a. “𝐶 varies directly as 𝑑”.
 Symbol: 𝐶 ∝ 𝑑
 Equation: 𝐶 = 𝑘𝑑
b. “𝐴 varies directly as 𝑆”.
 Symbol: 𝐴 ∝ 𝑆
 Equation: 𝐴 = 𝑘𝑆

equation;
c. “The area 𝐴 of a
circle varies directly as
the square of the
radius 𝑟.”
 Symbol: 𝐴 ∝ 𝑟 2
 Equation: 𝐴 = 𝑘𝑟 2

equation;
Given the table of values below, determine
whether y varies directly as x or not. If so, find the
constant of variation.
a. x 2 3 5
y 4 6 10

translate into direct variation statement a relationship between two quantities given: table of
values;
x 2 3 5 𝑦
Since = 𝑘
y 4 6 10 𝑥

4 6 10
⇒ = 2, = 2, =2
2 3 5
Then the common ratio is equal to
2. Thus, y varies directly as x.
translate into direct variation statement a relationship between two quantities given: table of
values;
x 10 15 25 𝑦
Since = 𝑘
y 2 3 5 𝑥

1 3 1 5 1
2
⇒ 10 = , = , =
5 15 5 25 5

Then the common ratio is equal to

.
Thus, y varies directly as

x 12 20 28 𝑦
Since = 𝑘
y 4 5 7 𝑥

1 5 1 7 1
4
⇒ 12 = , = , =
3 20 4 28 4
Then there is no common ratio. Thus,
y does not vary directly as x.

Determine whether each of
the following graphs shows a
direct variation.
translate into direct variation statement a relationship between two quantities given: graph and vice versa;
a. x -2 -1 1

y -5 -3 1

The graph
∙ does not show
∙ a direct

b. The velocity of a falling body

varies directly as the time of
flight. Ifof the
velocity thefalling body at the end of
2 seconds is 64.4 ft/s, find the velocity at
the end of 5 seconds.
INVERSE VARIATION
If two variables are so related such
that as one variable increases, the
other variable decreases
proportionally, the relationship is
called inverse proportion or inverse
variation.
INVERSE VARIATION
For variables 𝑥 and 𝑦 and
constant k, if 𝑥𝑦 is equal to 𝑘,
then 𝑦 is inversely
proportional to 𝑥, or 𝑦 varies
inversely as 𝑥. In symbols,
𝒌

𝒙
where 𝑘 is the constant of
variation.
