9.3 SCATTER PLOT AND LINE OF FIT

OBJECTIVES

1. Investigate relationships between quantities by using

points on scatter plots.
2. Use lines of fir to make and evaluate predictions.

Investigate Relationship Using Scatter Plots

Bivariate data– data with two variables
Scatter plot– shows the relationship between a set of data with two variables,
graphed as ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
The relationship is known as a correlation or an association.

Real-World Example 1: Evaluate a Correlation

WAGES Determine whether the graph shows a positive, negative or no
correlation. If there is a positive or negative correlation, describe its
meaning in the situation.
9.3 SCATTER PLOT AND LINE OF FIT

Practice 1:
1. Refer to the graph on annual attendance at the Houston Livestock Show and
Rode in Example 3. Determine whether the graph shows a positive, negative, or
no correlation. If there is a positive or negative or no correlation, describe its
meaning.

Real-World Example 2: Write a Line of Fit

INVASIVE The table below below shows the population growth of the zebra
mussels in a local recreational area. Identify the independent and dependent
variables. Is there a relationship in the data? If so, predict the number of zebra
mussels in 2039.

Real-World Example 3: Use Interpolation or Extrapolation

ENTERTAINMENT Use a scatter plot to find the approximate attendance at the
2010 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Step 1 Draw a line of fit.

Step 2 Write the slope-intercept

form of the equation

Step 3 Evaluate the function or 30.
