Over Lesson 4–5

The table shows the

average weight for given
heights. Does the data
have a positive or
negative correlation?

A. positive

B. negative

C. no correlation
Over Lesson 4–5

The table shows the

average weight for given
heights. Approximately
how much would you
expect a person who is
5’6” tall to weigh?

A. 140 lbs

B. 152 lbs

C. 160 lbs

D. 170 lbs

Refer to the scatter plot of

Jessica’s visits to the park.
Predict the number of times
Jessica will go to the park when
the temperature is 50 degrees.

Best-Fit Lines
Best-Fit Line
MOVIES The table shows the amount of money made by movies in the
United States. Use a graphing calculator to write an equation for the
best-fit line for that data. Let x be the number of years since 1995. Find
and interpret the correlation coefficient.
BIOLOGY The table shows the average body
temperature in degrees Celsius of nine insects at a
given temperature. Use a graphing calculator to write
the equation for the best-fit line for that data. Name the
correlation coefficient.

A. y = 0.85x + 1.28; 0.8182

B. y = 0.95x + 1.53; 0.9783
C. y = 1.53x + 0.95; 0.9873
D. y = 1.95x + 0.53; 0.8783
Write an equation of the best-fit lien for the data in each table.
Find and interpret the correlation coefficient. Round to the
nearest ten-thousandth. Let x be the number of years since 2007.
Graph and Analyze a Residual Plot
HOCKEY Graph and analyze the residual plot for the
data for Guided Practice 1A. Determine if the best-fit line
models the data well.
Graph and Analyze a Residual Plot

Unemployment Graph and analyze the residual plot

for the following data comparing graduation rates and
unemployment rates.

The plot appears to have a curved pattern, so the

regression line may not fid the data well.
A residual is positive when the observed value is
above the line, negative when the observed value is
below the line, and zero when it is on the line.
The best-fit line, which is also called the least-
squares regression line, minimizes the sum of the
squares of those distances.
Linear interpolation – when we estimate values
that are between known values
Linear extrapolation - when we estimate outside of
the range of the data
Use Interpolation and Extrapolation

PAINTBALL The table shows the points received by

the top ten paintball teams at a tournament. Estimate
how many points the 20th-ranked team received?

Write an equation of the best-fit for the data.

Then extrapolate to find the missing value.
Use Interpolation and Extrapolation

SWIMMING Predict the total attendance at a community

pool for each of the following temperatures

3A. 90 degrees 3B. 115

degrees
439 144
Median-Fit Lines
The equation of a median–fit line is calculated using
the medians of the coordinates of the data points.

PAINTBALL Find the graph the equation of a median-

fit line for the data in Example 3. Then predict the
score of the 15th ranked team.

Answer: The 15th-ranked team scored about 53 points.
