A centipede is a segmented arthropods. Each segment has a fair of legs. They are carnivores and have poisonous fangs in their mouth. A centipede is an example of invertebrates which belongs to the group of arthropods INVERTEBRATES- do not have backbone. It makes up roughly 97% of all animals on earth, while vertebrates make up only 3%. Invertebrates live in all kinds of environment and in almost every place on earth. They live on land, water or both. Some are small they cannot be seen by the naked eye while some are larger than most animals INVERTEBRATES

ARTHROPODS – are animals with hard exoskeleton, jointed legs segmented bodies. They include crustaceans, arachnids, myriapods and insects Insects- largest group of arthropods. They have three body parts; the head , thorax and abdomen. They have compound eyes, six jointed legs. They also have antennae fro chemical perception. Examples: ants, mosquitoes, fly, beetle, cockroaches Crustaceans – they have two pairs of antennae. Their bodies are divided into three regions: head, thorax and abdomen. They have gills fro breathing. Their exoskeleton are very hard. Examples: shrimp, crab, lobsters Spiders – are usually called arachnids. They live on land. They have two body regions: cephalothorax and abdomen. They have four pair of legs. They breathe through their trachea or book lungs. Examples: mites, ticks and scorpions Centipede and millipedes – are segmented arthropods. Each segment of centipede has a pair of legs while a millipede has a two pairs. Centipedes are carnivorous and have poisonous fangs in their mouth, which is why their sting is painful. Millipedes are detritivores meaning they fees on dead plant and animal matter. Bothe centipede and millipede live hidden in the soil, underneath rocks or logs. Answer these questions: 1. What are invertebrates? 2.What are the groups of invertebrates? 3.Which group has the largest group of animals? 4.What are the characteristics of insects? Crustaceans? Spiders? Centipedes and millipedes? 5.What characteristics of arthropods distinguish them from other groups of invertebrates?
