Sounds

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

Sound is created by vibrations.
Vibrations are fast shaking
movements. These movements
produce sound. There are different
kinds of sounds that you can hear
from the surroundings.
Do you like listening to music? Music
is pleasant to ears! Some music is
played through a radio. Different
instruments can produce music too.
You can hear music because of sounds.
But loud music can hurt your ears too.
Different objects produce different
kinds of sound.
EXPLORE
Loud or Soft
Compare different
kinds of sounds.

Interactive
How Loud it is?
Using the neuron kit, create a circuit that
will show different loudness of sounds.

EXPLAI
EXPLAIN
How do you describe a loud
sound?

Interactive
EXPLAIN
Loud sounds are sounds that are
high in volume, strong and very
easy to hear.

Interactive
EXPLAIN
How do you describe a soft
sound?

Interactive
EXPLAIN
Soft sounds are sounds that are
low in volume, quiet and
pleasant to hear and listen to.

Interactive
Some objects produce loud sounds. Loud
sounds are easy to hear.

EXPLAIN

Interactive
Some objects that produce loud sounds are
important. An ambulance and a fire truck
uses a siren. This is to let people know

EXPLAIN
about an emergency situation nearby. A train
has a loud horn sound. This is to inform
people that it is passing by the railroad.

A jackhammer is used in road constructions.
An alarm clock is used to wake you up from
asleep. You know if it is recess or lunch in

EXPLAIN
school if the bell rings.

Firecrackers are used to brighten up
celebrations. Musical instruments are used
to play in live concerts. People go to live

EXPLAIN
concerts to have fun.

Interactive
A loud sound is considered as noise. Noise
is an unpleasant kind of sound. People who
hear noise are not happy upon hearing them.

EXPLAIN
Too much noise can be harmful to people. It
can hurt one’s ears. It can cause headache
too!

Interactive
People should protect their ears when
listening to loud sounds. It is important to
cover one’s ears when in a noisy place. An

EXPLAIN
earplug may be used to lessen the sound that
enters the ear. If the sound is unbearable to
hear, leave the place immediately.

Interactive
Some objects produce soft sounds. Unlike

EXPLAIN
loud sounds, soft sounds are not easy to
hear. This kind of sound is pleasant to hear.

Some soft sounds are useful too. Soft music

like lullabies can make people feel relaxed.
Chirping birds are pleasant to hear too. A
chime produces soft sound when blown by
the wind.

There are soft and loud sounds in the
environment too. You hear thunders during
a stormy day. The sound of a heavy rain

EXPLAIN
may be loud to at times.

Interactive
EXPLAIN
In the beach, you can hear the soft sounds
when light wind blows. The sound of water
waves may be soft too if only light wind
blows. Rustling leaves will be soft too
during this time.

protect your ears
from loud
sounds?
Noise Pollution is considered as
risk to humans and other living
things, it is defined as regular or
too much exposure to elevated
sound levels that may lead to
serious health problems. This
pollution is coming from traffic
sounds from cars, ambulances etc,
construction sounds, industrial
sounds and loud music from
commercial venues like mall.
This pollution can cause
Noise Induced Hearing Loss
(NIHL) or permanent hearing
impairment, it can also
affect sleep, can cause
headaches and can also
lead to serious heart
problems.
