REVOLUTION THAT
DEFINED SOCIETY

CHARLES DARWIN
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After studying this topic , you should be able to:

• Understand that by biological evolution we meant that many of the organisms
that inhabit the earth today are different from those that inhabit in the past.
• Understand that natural selection is one of the several processes that can bring
about evolution.
• Understand that the four propositions underlying Darwin’s theory of evolution
through natural selection are:
o There is therefore a struggle for existence;
o More individuals are produce than can survive;
o Individuals within a species show variation;
o And offspring tend to inherit their parent’s characters.
DARWINIAN REVOLUTION THAT DEFINED
SOCIETY

 Was the first comprehensive and readable synthesis of the history of evolutionary thought.

 Originally published in1979.

 Darwin’s revolutionary theory was the new species arise naturally.

 Individuals with characteristics best suited to their environment are more like to survive.
CHARLES DARWIN

Charles Robert Darwin was an English

naturalist, geologist and biologist , best known
for his contributions to the science of
evolution. his proposition that all species of
life have descended from common ancestors
is now widely accepted and considered a
fundamental concept in science.

Born on February 12, 1809 , the mount house, His books are:
shrewsbury, united kingdom .
 the voyage of beagle
Died on April 19, 1882 .
 On the origin of species
Home: down house, downe, united kingdom.
 The descent of man
DARWINISM

 is a theory of biological evolution developed by the English naturalist Charles Darwin

( 1809-1882) and others, stating that all the species of organism arise and develop through
the natural selection of small , inherited variation.
 Stating that all species of organism arise and develop through the natural selection of
small, inherited variations that increase the individual’s ability to complete, survive, and
reproduce .
 Natural selection explains how a wide variety of life are form and develop. Genes are
existed and traits are heritable. Meaning, it is passed from parents to offspring.
DARWINIAN REVOLUTION THAT DEFINED
SOCIETY
 Some individuals have traits better suited to the environment than others. These
individual have adaptive traits.
 It is one of the processes that drives evolution and explain the diversity of life.
 If the environment changed rapidly, some species cannot adopt through natural selection.
 natural selection which is the process through which species adapt to their
environment.
 Individuals having characteristics that are suited to the environment are more likely to
survive and reproduce and passed their genes on the children.
 And, for those individuals that are poorly adapted to the environment are less likely to
reproduce and the genes are less likely to be passed on to their children.
FOUR COMPONENTS OF DARWIN’S
PROCESS OF NATURAL SELECTION:

VARIATION

INHERITANCE

HIGH RATE OF POPULATION GROWTH

DIFFEREMTIAL SURVIVAL AND REPRODUCTION

DARWINIAN EVOLUTION:

THE FOUR KEYPOINTS OF DARWIN’S
THEORY OF EVOLUTION ARE:

1. The individuals of a species are not identical;

2. Traits are passed from generation to generation;

3. More offspring are born that can survive, and;

4. Only the survivors of the competitions for resources will reproduce.

Darwin touched the modern-day society:

Learned about what it is that makes a species thrive and how ecosystem
and species become extinct.

“We do what what we do and think how we think”.

“ecological niche modeling” determines the likelihood of an organism

surviving in a particular ecosystem.
