Definition

 Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses high

frequency sound waves and their echoes.

 Typical diagnostic sonographic scanners operate in the

frequency range of 2 to 18 megahertz.

 Hundreds of times greater than the limit of human hearing.

Application of medical US
Examining body of internal organs like
Heart and blood vessels
Liver
Gallbladder
Spleen
Pancreas
Kidneys
Bladder
Uterus
Unborn child (fetus) in pregnant patients Etc.
Benefits of US
Noninvasive (no needles or injections).
Does not use any ionizing radiation.
Provides real-time imaging.
No radiation
Low cost of the equipment
No special building.

Precautions

1. Connect the power plug of this system and it’s peripherals to wall receptacles
2. Disconnect the AC power before you clean or uninstall
3. When using peripherals, not powered by the auxiliary output of the ultrasound system
4. Do not use this system simultaneously with equipment, which generate high frequency signal.
5. Avoid water sprayed on or into the system, electric shock may result.
Operation

 Switch on power
 Attach electrodes according to instructions
 Use the proper probe to scan.
 Interpretation is viewed on the monitor, as it is explained,
diagnosis made and printed out.
 Patient is treated according to the finding of the report.

Care and maintenance
Cont.…
Immediate care
 Switch off power from the machine, stabilizer and mains.
 Clean the gel from the patient examined site.
 Clean the probe and electrodes to remove gel.
 Make the patient comfortable.
 Unplug the top plug from the power source
 Avoid twisting the electrode
Cont.…
Routine care
 Dump dust when used or when it is dirty.
 Cover the machine with clean cloth to prevent dust.
 Use a stabilizer to control current.
 After using the machine, remove the gel from probe.
 Keep in a safe place
 Check for any crack in the probe connectors and rubber tubing.
 In case of failure:
Report to immediate supervisor
To the User Trainer
To the qualified Medical Technician for repair.
