Depositional Landforms

Learning Objective:
To understand how depositional landforms are formed.
November 20, 2023
Depositional Landforms
STARTER:
Definitions of the different types of coastal depositional
Spit Is very similar to a spit. It is a
ridge of sediment which forms
across the entrance to a bay. It is
features usually parallel to the coast.

Tombolo It is an extended stretch of beach

material that projects out to sea
and is joined to the mainland at
one end.

Bar Is when an island is attached to

the mainland by a narrow piece
of land

Coastal Deposition is when the sea drops or deposits

material. This can include sand, sediment and shingle.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson:

• To be able to define coastal depositional

features.
• To be able to produce diagrams describing how
the different types of coastal depositional
landforms.
• To be able to explain how coastal depositional
features form.
Task
• You have 20 minutes to complete the worksheet for the
depositional landform that you have been given.
• Include:
– Simple diagram showing how they form.
– A worded explanation of how they form.
– Example of where one can be found.
• After the first 20 minutes, you will have an additional 20 minutes
to complete the missing sections of your worksheet.
– To do so you must get into a group of 3 (with 1 person having
completed each of the remaining sections)
– Teach and be taught about the different depositional features
– YOU ARE NOT TO JUST COPY WHAT YOUR FRIEND HAS WRITTEN THEY
ARE TO EXPLAIN IT TO YOU!!!

Spits
Spurn Head in Yorkshire is a
good example of a spit.
The spit forms a sweeping
curve which continues the
line of the coast.

The sand which forms the spit has

been transported along the Holderness
Coast by longshore drift. The energy in
the waves transporting the material
reduces where the North Sea meets
the Humber Estuary. As a result the
material is deposited. This process is
known as deposition.
Stages of spit development:
The development of Spurn Head

1. Longshore drift moves material along the coastline.

2. A spit forms when the material is deposited.
3. Over time, the spit grows and develops a hook if wind direction changes further
out.
4. Waves cannot get past a spit, which creates a sheltered area where silt is
deposited and mud flats or salt marshes form.
Tombolo
•Prevailing wind and waves generate the movement of sediments through the
process of long shore drift.
• Change in shape of headland results in the deposition of sediments and the
development of a spit.
•Spit grown out from the mainland and joining an island, creating a TOMBOLO.
•Old Island now joined to the mainland by a spit.
Tombolo
Where a spit joins
the mainland to
an island a
tombolo may be
created .

The longest and best known tombolo in Britain is Chesil

Beach.

Bar
If a spit joins one part of the mainland to another it is called a bar.

•Prevailing wind and waves

generate the movement of
sediments through the process of
long shore drift.
• Change in shape of headland
results in the deposition of
sediments and the development of a
spit.
•Spit grows out from the headland
and across the bay joining the
opposite headland. Forming a BAR
•Both headlands are now connected
by the same spit and damn of the

Gcqds
For example, there is a bar at Slapton Sands in Devon.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson:

• All will be able to name coastal depositional

features.
• Most will be able to explain coastal
depositional features.
• Some will be able to explain coastal
depositional features.
