Depositional Features

L/O: to be able to explain longshore drift and how

spits and bars were formed by deposition

Starter:
What do these features have in common?
They were both created by
deposition

The dropping of eroded

material by the sea
The 2 depositional features

one end attached to the
mainland

Q) Explain how material is moved along the coast (6m)

 Material is transported along the coast by a

process called Longshore Drift
 Waves come into the beach at an angle and pick up
material
 They come in at an angle because of wind direction
 The waves that come in are called swash
 The water pulls the material back down the beach
 The waves move back down the beach due to
gravity
 These backwards movements are called backwash
 This process repeats itself along the beach
 The material is moved along the beach.
Key idea for today
Longshore drift will continue along a coastline
until the coastline changes direction
Stages of spit development:

1. Material is moved along the coastline by Longshore drift

2. When the coastline changes shape, LSD continues and material is
deposited out to sea and continues to build up forming a spit
3. Strong winds can cause the end of a spit to bend or curve
4. In the sheltered water behind the spit deposits of mud can build
up forming a salt marsh
Bar
If a spit joins one part of the mainland to another it is
called a bar.
• Prevailing wind and waves
generate the movement
of sediments through the
process of long shore
drift.
• Change in shape of
headland results in the
deposition of sediments
and the development of a
spit.
• Spit grows out from the
headland and across the
bay joining the opposite
headland. Forming a BAR
