LECTURE OBJECTIVE

This lecture will develop your knowledge in/on....

– impacts of disaster and strategies for post disaster

economic recovery
INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION

• The energy, telecommunications, transportation and financial structures pose (bhangima)

new challenges for their secure, reliable (believe) management and operation due to their
increasing complexity and interconnectedness.
• No single entity has complete control of these multi-scale, distributed, highly interactive
networks, or the ability to evaluate, monitor, and manage them in real time.
• Disaster management mainly focuses on inhabited (living) structures, the failure of which
would pose direct risk of life loss or injury.
• The survival and rapid recovery of networked infrastructure service systems is critical
to reducing the impacts of both natural and technological disasters.
INFRASTRUCTURE
• Infrastructure refers to the systems needed for the functioning of a community.
• It comprises of an enormous (more) portion of built environment
• It includes
– Water supply and disposal of wastewater
– Road,rail,air or marine transportation
– Electric,gas and liquid fuels
– Communication systems
– Emergency services
• Large urban regions, cannot survive long if there is any failure of any of above said
systems.

CONCLUSIONS

• Infrastructure refers to the systems needed for the functioning of a community.

• Maintenance of infrastructure is crucial in disaster management, without which large
urban regions cannot survive for longer periods.
• Infrastructure includes
– D rinking water system
– Sanitary sewer system
– Energy system
– Transportation system
– Emergency services system
