The history of the Viscri village

With a history that goes back to the 12th century, Viscri is

maybe the most famous village in Romania. Prince Charles’
visits, its fortified church, and the activity of the Mihai
Eminescu trust helped this small village reinvent itself in the
past years. Its promotion was such a success that Viscri is
right now one of Transylvania’s must-see attractions
The church

Viscri is best-known for its white fortified church, first

mentioned in 1400 as Alba Ecclesia. Like most
monuments of the time, the church went through different
construction phases. The local Szekler population was the
first to build a small church on the site in the early 12th
century. Decades later, the German colonists took over
control of the land and started a new
chapter in its history.
Tower of the fortified church

The first towers were added to the church around 1525. In the XVIII
century, the second defensive wall was built, as well as a covered
corridor for storing corn. From one of the towers of the fortification you
can climb a very narrow corridor, followed by a few wooden stairs and
you can admire the panorama of the village, with hills and meadows, as
well as the authentic roofs of the houses.
The museum

The museum is also located inside the fortified church

and holds very interesting objects. Looking at the old
crates of the neighborhoods, you will find out relevant
details about the organization of the Saxon communities.
The museum also holds, among other things, boxes and
various tools, pieces of furniture and traditional ports.
Prince Charles house

Prince Charles fell in love with the historical beauty of the place more
than two decades ago.Prince Charles bought an old house in the village
of Viscri in 1996, rebuilt it in a traditional style and turned Viscri into a
highly sought-after tourist destination.
For many years, the crown prince helped develop projects for the
preservation of architectural heritage.
The property owned by Prince Charles in the village of Viscri is a
traditional Saxon house with specific elements such as wide wooden
gates and clay roof tiles. Part of the house dates back to the XVIII
century
Prince Charles usually spends a few days a year
in the country, while the guesthouse is rented to
the public when he is not there. The location is
known as the Blue House and has seven double
bedrooms with bathroom, a drawing room and
dining room, a living room and a kitchen. Rustic
style is maintained everywhere, with high
ceilings and white concrete walls.
