Strength of our livestock farming
1. Enhanced milk production in spite of shortage of feed resources,
thereby increasing the availability of animal protein to consumers.
2. Improved transportation and communication facilities.
3. Increased availability of indigenously manufactured equipments for
processing the feeds and animal products.
4. Vast natural resources including animal breeds well adapted to the local
environment and feeding practices.
5. Socio-religious and agriculture system.

6. Vast pools of trained personnel in the field of research, development,


health and extension.

7. Participation of women in animal management.

8. Vast potential for export of meat and meat products


CONSTRAINTS / CAUSES OF LOW PRODUCTION/
Weaknesses

1. Tropical climatic condition


2. Lack of awareness about balanced feeding
3. Seasonal fluctuations in availability of feeds
4. Regional imbalances in livestock population and feed resources
5. Low productivity of cattle and arable land
6. Lack of coordination between research, feed industry and extension
workers
7. Absence of data records which is essential for preparing development
programme
8. Lack of infrastructure to control the disease among animals
9. Lack of awareness/facilities/technologies about the processing of crop
residue
10. Poor marketing facilities
11. Animal husbandry is considered subsidiary to agriculture
12. Lack of quality control
OPPORTUNITIES OF LIVESTOK FARMING

• Increased demand for milk and other livestock


products
• Employment generation through organised
collection and processing of non-conventional
feed resources into compounded/complete feeds
• Scope for the utilization of waste from the
growing food processing industries in the
organised sector in the country
• Availability of animal production technologies for
faster development and effective implementation
FUTURE THREATS

• Increase in use of crop residues in other industries


• Mechanised harvesting of crops resulting in
sizeable loss of crop residue
• Invariably poor quality of compounded cattle feed
• Export of good quality of oil cakes and meals
• Less availability of molasses to feed industry
• Indiscriminate use of crossbreeding programme
• Recurring natural calamities viz. drought, flood,
disease etc.
