• Do you remember the formula to find the area of square,
rectangle or other shape?
• Can you find any pattern in our daily life?

Consider the first three figures of a sequence number
formed by matches as shown below!

Calculate the number of matches in each figure and write down

Based the previous observation, we have:

Consider these number sequences and write down


the next two terms.
• 1, 3, 5, 7, ... → 9, 11 • 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, ..., ...→ 34, 55
• 2, 4, 6, 8, ... → 10, 12 • 3, 3, 7, 5, 11, 7, 15, 9, ..., ...→ 19, 11

DEFINITION
The previous examples show that we can determine
the next term of any number sequence.
The definition of number pattern is an arrangement
of numbers which follow a certain rule.

• 1, 3, 5, 7, ...
The first term : U1 = 1
The second term : U2 = 3
