Find the Sum
The following are the formulas to get the
sum of an arithmetic sequence.

Example 1:
Find the sum of the first 10 terms of the
arithmetic sequence 3, 9, 15, 21,…
Given: a1=3 n = 10 d=6
Sol’n:

Sn = [2a1 + (n – 1)d]

  = 5 + 54)
= [2(3) + (10 – 1)6]

= 5)
= [6 + (9)6]
= 300
Example 2:
Find the sum of the 30 terms of the
arithmetic sequence -5, -9, -13, - 17,…
Given: a1= -5 n = 30 d = -4

Sol’n:
Sn = [2a1 + (n – 1)d]
= 15(-10116)

= [2(-5) + (30 – 1)-4]
= 15)

= 15[-10 + (29)-4]
= 1890
= 15 + (-116)]
Example 3:
Find the sum of all multiples of 3 between 5 and 64.
The multiples of 3 from 5 to 64 form the arithmetic
sequence 6, 9, 12,…,63. The sum is 6 + 9 + 12+…
+63.
Thus, a1 = 6, an = 63, and d = 3.
Sol’n 1: Sol’n 2:

n=a1 + (n-1)d 60 = 3n Sn = [2a1 + (n – 1)d]

3 = 6 + (n-1)3
= S20 = [2(6) + (20 – 1)3]
3 = 6 + (3n – 3) = 10[12 + (19)3] = 10(69)
3 – 6 + 3 = 3n 20 = n = 10(12 + 57) = 690
Example 4:
Find the sum of the integers from 1 to 50.
1, 2, 3, … 49, 50
Given: a1=1 an=50
Sol’n:
S= = 50 (51)
2
S = 50 (1+50) = 1275
2
Try this!
Find the sum of the first 20 positive even
numbers.
Sol’n:
The positive even numbers form the sequence
2, 4, 6, 8, … with d = 2, a1 = 2, and n = 20.

Sn = [2a1 + (n – 1)d]
= 104 + 38)

S20 = [2(2) + (20 – 1)2] = 420

= [2(2) + (19)2]
Try this!
Find the sum of odd integers from 1 to 100.
The odd integers from 1 to 100 from the
sequence 1,3,5,7,…with d = 2, a1 = 1 and n = ?.
Sol’n 1: Sol’n 2:

an=a1 + (n-1)d Sn = [2a1 + (n – 1)d]
99 = 1 + (n-1)2
S50 = [2(1) + (50 – 1)2]
99 = 1 + 2n – 2
99 – 1 + 2 = 2n = 25[2 + (49)2]
100 = 2n
= 25 + 98)

50 = n = 25) = 2500

A geometric sequence is a
sequence where each term after the
first is obtained by multiplying the
preceding term by a non zero
constant called common ratio.
Example 1:
1, 3, 9, 27, 81, 243, 729,…
This geometric sequence has a factor of three between each
number. Each term (except the first term) is found by
multiplying the previous term by 3.

The common ratio r, can be determined by dividing any term
in the sequence by the term precedes it. Thus, in the
geometric sequence 1, 3, 9, 27, 81, 243, 729, …, the common
ratio is 3 since
Example 2:
32, 16, 8, 4, …

This geometric sequence has a factor of between each
number. Each term (except the first term) is found by
multiplying the previous term by .

The common ratio r, can be determined by dividing any
term in the sequence by the term precedes it. Thus, in the
geometric sequence 32, 16, 8, 4, …, the common ratio is
since
Example 3:
Find r in this geometric sequence.

1, 4, 16, 64,…

Find the value of r by dividing each term by the one before it.

1 4 16 64

  =
The value of r is 4.
= =
Example 4:
Find r in this geometric sequence.

  ,
-9, 3, -1,

Find the value of r by dividing each term by the one before it.

-9 3 -1

= =
The value of r is .

= =
Helpful Hint

When the terms in a geometric sequence alternate

between positive and negative, the value of r is

negative.
Try this…
Identify the common ratio in each geometric sequence and find the next term.

 r =
 1.) 9, 3, 1, , , ____

2.) 8, -4, 2, -1, , ____

  𝟏
−  r =

3.) 3, 15, 75, 375,____

4.) -1, 4, -16, 64, ____

-256  r =

5.) -2, -4, -8, -16, ____

-32  r =
Questions…
1. What have you noticed on geometric sequence number 1?

 1.)  r =
9, 3, 1, , , ____

Having a common ratio less than 1 but greater than 0, the geometric sequence will be in

decreasing order.
Questions…
2. What have you noticed on geometric sequence number 3 and 5?

3.) 3, 15, 75, 375, ____ 1875  r =

5.) -2, -4, -8, -16, ____ -32  r =

Having a common ratio greater than 1, if the first term is positive then you have an

increasing geometric sequence. But if the first term is negative, you will have a

decreasing geometric sequence.

Questions…
3. What have you noticed on geometric sequence number 2 and 4?

  𝟏
 2.) −  r =
8, -4, 2, -1, , ____ 𝟒
4.) -1, 4, -16, 64, ____  r =
-256

Having a common ratio of less than 0(meaning it is a negative real number) then the

geometric sequence is an alternating sequence.

The behavior of a geometric sequence depends on the value of

the common ratio. If the common ratio is:

• positive, the terms will all be the same sign as the initial

term.

• negative, the terms will alternate between positive and

negative.

• greater than 1, there will be exponential growth.

• equal to 1, the progression will be a constant sequence.
