2. 76.5
3. 200
4. 600
5. -21

 Analysis:
1. After doing the activity, did you encounter any difficulties in performing
your task? Why?
2. What are the things you need before computing the sequence?
3. How do you solve the sum of the arithmetic sequence?
4. Can you cite the importance of Arithmetic Series in your daily life?
 Abstraction
A series is the indicated sum of the terms of the sequence. Thus,
a 1 , a2 , a3 , … an are terms of a sequence, then the sum Sn=a1 +a2 +a 3+ …+an is
called a series. A series is finite if the series is finite. In a similar way, a series is
infinite if the series is infinite.

In general, if {a1 ,a 2 , a3 , … an , … is an infinite sequence then, the

corresponding infinite series isa 1+ a2+ a3 +…+ an +…, where a n is called the
general term or the nth term of the series. We use compact notation, called
summation notation to write a series from the general term of the corresponding
sequence
The sum of the first n terms of the arithmetic sequence with first term
a 1 , nth term an∧the common difference d ¿ is
n n
Sn= (a 1+ an ), or Sn= [2 a1 + ( n−1 ) d ].
2 2

To find the formula for Sn, we can write out the terms as follows:
Sn=a1 + ( a1 + d ) + ( a1 +2 d ) +…+ ( an−2 d ) + ( an−d ) + an

The same sum can be written in reverse as in

Sn=an + ( a n−d ) + ( an−2 d ) + …+ ( a1 +2 d ) + ( a 1+ d ) +a1

Adding the corresponding terms of these two expressions for Sn, we get
2 S n=( a1+ an ) + ( a1+ an ) + ( a1 +an ) + …+(a1+ an )

The right hand side of this expression contains n terms, each equal to( a 1+ an ),

n
such that 2 S n=n (a1 +a n) or Sn= (a 1+ an ).
2
n
Sn= (a 1+ an ), where n is the number of terms, a 1is the first term and a n is the
2
nth term or the last term.
Recall that a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d is the general term of an arithmetic sequence.

n
Sn= ( a1 +a n )∧a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
2
n
Sn= [ a1 +a 1+ ( n−1 ) d ]
2
n
Sn= [2 a1 + ( n−1 ) d ]
2

Example/s
1. Find the sum of the first 20 terms of an arithmetic sequence whose
first term is 5 and whose common difference is -3.
Solution:
Given : a 1=5 , d=−3 , n=20
Since, the frist term and the common difference, and the number of the

n
terms are known we use the formula Sn= [2 a1 + ( n−1 ) d ]
2
By Substitution:
20
S20= [2(5)+ ( 20−1 ) (−3)]
2
S20=10 [10−57]
S20=−470

2. Find the sum of all the odd numbers between 51 and 99 inclusive.
Solution:
Given : a 1=51, d =2 ,a n=99 , n=?

Find n first, then Sn.

To find n use the general term formula

a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
99=51+ ( n−1 ) 2

99−49=2 n

50 2 n
=
2 2

n=25
Then, find Sn
25
S25= (51+99)
2
25
S25= (150)
2

S25=1875

 Application
Juan Dela Cruz is a grade 10 student of Matipid National High School. He started
to save Php. 10.00 on Nov. 1, 2020, Php. 12.00 on November 2, Php. 14.00 on
November 3, 2020 and so on. How much will he save on December 25, 2020?

IV. Closure
As a student, do you think saving money in a sequence method helps you to
save more? Justify your answer.

V. Assignment:
Direction: Solve the following problems.

1. Find the sum of all odd integers between 100 and 500.
2. Find the sum of the first 25 th terms of an arithmetic sequence whose first term is -9
and whose common difference is 5.
3. A theatre has 70 seats in the first row, 78 seats in the second row, 86 seats in the
third row, and so on in an arithmetic sequence. If the theatre has 24 rows find the total
number of seats.
4. Find the first term of an arithmetic progression whose tenth term is 12 and whose
first ten terms have the sum of 80.
5. Try to answer: what is the arithmetic mean of 45 and 15.
